About this deal

What most people don’t know is that there is glycerin in all soap because it is a byproduct of the soap making process. Because excess oils can make for a cloudy soap, I chose not to superfat this soap. (Superfatting is when you add more oils to the soap than what are needed to react with the amount of lye used. Some unreacted oils remain in the soap, and can leave a hydrating film on your skin when you use the soap.) I would have loved to use a consumable alcohol without any added scents or ingredients like Everclear, but I wasn’t able to find anything like that here. Once it dissolves properly, add the 13 ounces of vodka and 3 ounces of liquid vegetable glycerin. (Note: alcohol can catch on fire pretty easily, which is why you want to use a slow cooker for this!) Clean-up is easy. (After all, it’s just soap you’re cleaning off your supplies.) Just soak the molds in hot water, rinse and dry well.

I have a small business that makes more than 400 bars a month and it’s still growing. I sell a lot of soap at the tailgate markets in the summer and I always have people asking for a glycerin soap base. It’s still a common myth that glycerin soap is milder and better for you. That can be true in some cases, but when you hand-craft a good cold process bar of soap, it contains just about as much glycerin.I now have been left with a completely full bottle of absinthe at my house, if anybody wants to come for a party. (Just kidding about the second part.) Superfatting glycerin soaps I think next time I’d try with a stronger alcohol to see if my soap turns out more translucent. If anybody gives a 96% alcohol, or something similar, a try, I’d love to hear how it goes!
