About this deal

An interesting read overall and a thought-provoking intro to the concept of the "human universe". Not the definitive text on explaining consciousness but enough to whet one's appetite to learn more. A man in a space suit floats above the International Space Station. Clooney? On honeymooney? With ’er indoors waiting inside … ’fraid not. Don’t worry though – it’s the world’s second sexiest man, Prof Brian Cox. Have they really sent him up there, to the firmament? How much did that cost? No wonder they’re closing down BBC3 … Oh, a diver swims past, making bubbles, it’s not space at all, this is an underwater space station, in a big swimming pool, at a cosmonaut training centre outside Moscow.

A brief history of life on Earth. “We are mammals, which first appeared 225 million years ago in the Triassic era.” In the tradition of Guns, Germs, and Steel and Sapiens, a winner of the Royal Society Prize for Science Books shows h ow four tools have enabled humans to control the destiny of our species. The American theoretical physicist John Archibald Wheeler (1911-2008), however, put it the most poetically:urn:lcp:humanuniverse0000coxb_t0f6:epub:3cd25471-012c-4c0f-be00-c71f905d8d97 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier humanuniverse0000coxb_t0f6 Identifier-ark ark:/13960/s2629wpq0qh Invoice 1652 Isbn 9780008125080

This book asks questions about our origins, our destiny, and our place in the universe. We have no right to expect answers; we have no right to even ask. But ask and wonder we do.It explains fine tuning as a result of the eternal inflaction that leads to a infinite inmortal universo growing fractal like withut end, there is not fine tuning problema, given the infinite multiverse,we are inevitable. All the matter and light we can see in the universe makes up a trivial 5 per cent of everything. The rest is hidden. This could be the biggest puzzle that science has ever faced. This was a different format for chopra probably because it was written in collaboration with a Doctor of Physics. Cox is a gifted author and educator; his books are fun and educational. His passion for science and love of humanity is exuded throughout the book. In the Preface (called “You and the Universe are One”), the authors provide a general explanation of the basics:

Cox and Cohen do not over-claim for science. They claim for it only what it can do - give us the best framework 'to hand' for understanding what the world is really like out there and what makes us what we are or at least appear to be.

This is a long read with few "oh yeah" moments and many "well I guess we know how he feels about that" moments. Brian Cox explores mankind's place in the universe. He considers the possibility of alien life – could it exist and will humans ever find it?

Great examples where science clashed with religion, handled with the utmost respect and care. “Catholic dogma asserted that the Moon and the other heavenly bodies were perfect, unblemished spheres. Previous astronomers who had viewed the Moon, either with the naked eye or through telescopes, had drawn a two-dimensional blotchy surface, but Galileo saw the patterns of light and dark differently. His training in chiaroscuro revealed to him an alien lunar landscape of mountain ranges and craters.” The title might be a bit misleading - for the most part, this book is about quantum physics and other branches of science. But what is interesting is the fact that the authors make very unique and bold conclusions about the scientific research. Some might call it esoteric or maybe some far-fetched bullshit, but for me, it sounded like a possibility. In fact, it sounded much like what I have imagined might actually be true about the universe and our reality. It also sounded a lot like something some religions might preach, or some people on psychedelics, or people practicing mindfulness and yoga and leading a deeply self-reflexion oriented lifestyle. Basically, it sounded like a conclusion many people can reach by VERY different roads and processes. Human Universe was commissioned by Janice Hadlow for BBC Two and Kim Shillinglaw, head commissioner for science and natural history. [4] The series consists of five sixty-minute episodes. [4] [5] International broadcast [ edit ] The facts themselves aren’t ground breaking but the way they are presented is a total different story. From Big Bang to quantum physics, from Lucy to Paul Young, from Giordano Bruno to Hubble, this book is an ode to science and humanity.

The authors present almost everything they offer us in an uncompromisingly scientifically-based way. They lapse rarely, for example by simply asserting in a few sentences the 'threat of climate change' - either they know and can explain or they cannot.
