One of the greatest slices of this universe is the companion novels that focus on individual characters. Over the show’s first four seasons, the cast has grown and (even with long run times for each episode) not every character gets their time in the spotlight. As Season 4 begins, Lucas is looking at starting high school differently than the others. He considers the opportunity for a brand-new start. He sets goals to make new friends, to get out of his comfort zone, and to still be true to himself. It’s in these struggles that the book finds its most powerful message and tone. Dustin’s hair, which was already big, is now even big- ger. Maybe because he isn’t wearing a hat to cover his curls this time. Without it, what he’s done to his hair is very clear. I loved Lucas's pov, because it really fleshes his character out and explains what's going on when he's not actively fighting monsters from the upside down, but rather the monsters that roam the streets of high school. I think it's fitting that his book is set in the immediate follow up to season 4, because Caleb McLaughlin was a stand out on the show this past year. Instead, he is reduced to a side character when he has so much depth.This was quite enjoyable. It was nice to get some insight into Lucas and what happened between the 3rd and 4th season. And his struggle as a person of colour in a small ass town in Indiana in the 80s. It did read a bit like fanfiction at times but I feel like that is inevitable when you are writing a companion novel to a franchise. Man, I am now heartbroken over Max and Lucas again.
