In that violence a young life was lost. It was a life needlessly lost and needlessly and brutally taken. A few doors down, harmless old Mrs Freer is bludgeoned to death, and Rina can’t help but be drawn into the mystery. At the end of October 2011, Tabak was found guilty of the murder of Joanna Yeates – the jury didn't believe his story that he had 'accidentally killed her' while trying to stifle her scream. Joanna Yeates, an architect, was inside her flat in Bristol before Vincent Tabak, a neighbour, entered and strangled her.

The 31-year-old smothered Catherine Wells-Burr, 23, as she slept at their home in Chard in September 2012.

Detective Constable Karen Thomas, sensed something wasn't right when she met Tabak in Holland to get a statement.

Noreen O'Connor was acting as the nurse, housekeeper, secretary and companion for Marie Tarks and Frank Tiarks. His accomplices, ex-girlfriend Anna Lagwinowicz, 32, and her uncle Tadevsz Dmytryszyn, 38, got the same sentence. They disposed of Ms Wells-Burr's body in her car before setting it on fire. Rina Martin is a retired actress who had played a TV sleuth for years. Now living on Frantham-on-Sea, she has put all that behind her. She now runs a guest house. But when a brutal killer arrives in the sleepy town, and old Mrs Freer is murdered, Rina can't help herself from being drawn into the investigation. There is no evidence to suggest that anyone else was present or involved in Kevin's death," Mr Williams added.

Rina, the tweed skirt wearing, retired actress was actually a secondary character as troubled policeman Mac was the real star. Rina is the landlady of a house filled with what seemed to be music hall, end of the pier type performers. That just seemed so dated and unlikely. The story seemed modern yet there were a few details, such as the boarding house residents, using a landline and the names of some of the characters, that made me query when exactly it was set. I then saw it had first been published in 2008 under a different name but Rina’s sections seemed old-fashioned and almost like a separate gentle short story woven into another far harsher modern one. Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of reading Julie Wassmer's debut, and the first book of this series, The Whitstable Pearl Mystery. So I was quite excited to read the second one and catch up with the lovely Pearl. After solving her first case as a private investigator on summer, she has been slowly building her business while still managing her restaurant. explores all the murder and debauchery in the seemingly perfect English seaside town of Whitstable…’ Washington Post

The 45-year-old then fled his Brendon Gardens home and attempted to take his own life by lying in front of a train. Her killer, Christopher Hampton, escaped justice for 30 years, but was eventually traced thanks to a DNA breakthrough. Murder on Sea is the second of the Whitstable Pearl mysteries. It is an engaging cosy crime novel, with a cast of likeable characters, most notable of whom is Pearl's mother, the eccentric, talented and warm-hearted Dolly. The thread of romance that runs through the book is carefully balanced and augments rather than disrupts the detective action. The investigation ends with a Poirot style gathering of the suspects in Pearl's home on Christmas Eve. Pearl is a delightful heroine, a fascinating mixture of adventurous, imaginative and pragmatic. Murder on Sea is an enjoyable seasonal murder mystery; an excellent Christmas read. She later returned home alone and invited Mr Baker to their house. Their children were staying with his parents. And, besides, damaged DI Sebastian McGregor needs all the help he can get to solve this baffling case . . .

Owen Pellow was jailed for life after murdering his ex-partner in Burnham-on-Sea (Image: Avon and Somerset Police)I was attracted to this book as a ‘cozy crime ‘ ,as a little light relief from my usual preferred genre of psychological thriller. It was 13 years later a workman found her remains in woodland near Thornbury near the M5 on October 5, 2009. If you love Agatha Christie, Jeanne M. Dams, The Thursday Murder Club, Glenda Young, Stella Cameron, Frances Evesham or Ann Cleeves, prepare to be hooked by this enchanting character-driven mystery!
