About this deal

An incredible story that reinvents the concept of a school for magical kids. So inspiring and creatively original.’ L. D. Lapinski, author of The Strangeworlds Travel Agency Come on, T?´p?´, let the child have some fun,” Mrs. Mataka said as she passed us on her way to the sink. The only objective issue I can highlight is that the characters, aside from Onyeka, fell a bit flat. They all had one main characteristic each and that was that; I couldn’t tell them apart from time to time and that was a shame, because I liked Onyeka as a main character. She was extremely flawed and a bit too stubborn, but she was a strong MC and I would have liked all the other characters to be as well built as she was. Seeing as this is just the first book in a series, maybe they will be more developed in later instalments.

Common Sense is the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of all kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in the 21st century. This is the first book in a series. There was a lot of setting up the world and the villain was fairly generic and easy to predict. It's not earning any points for twists because everything is laid out very standardly. But that did make it easier to follow. The mystery is the part that I loved the most! What happened to Onyeka’s father? What created all these superpowered kids? There are so many big questions that come up that I absolutely needed answered that made me keep reading until I could find out more. My eyebrows lift at her tone, but she’s right, and I don’t want to mess up her special day. I snatch the ugly cap from her.Onyeka is the first in a series of children’s books from the author, journalist and hair care educator, which is set to be published in the U.S. and UK by Simon & Schuster in June. It tells the story of a teenager who learns she has powers, subsequently traveling to Nigeria to learn more about her origins. There, she discovers a threat to her newfound magical community. i loved the friendship between Onyeka and her best friend, how deep it was and so full of support and love. i loved how this book is set in nigeria for the second half of it and the different towns we get to see. i loved the different powers we learnt about. i loved a lot of things lol. Until that day at the swimming pool when it’s her hair that saves her, and best friend Cheyenne, from drowning. Shinji Takahashi and the Mark of the Coatl is the first book in a globe-trotting adventure that combines high-tech wizardry, old-world legends and a little bit of magic.

As Onyeka comes to terms with her newly-discovered powers, she initially struggles to control them and has to do a lot of growing up in a short space of time. With her sense of liberation comes the realisation of the responsibility she holds, both to herself and to others. It was a lot of fun to be in a magic school setting. There were a lot of interesting characters and Onyeka learned so much about herself from interacting with the others. She made some close friends and was able to really be herself for the first time.

She won’t find out,” Cheyenne replies. But we both hear the lie in her voice. Mum always finds out. It’s her superpower. Twelve-year-old Vinnie Fyfe works in the tea-shop at Brighton aquarium, and waits for her milliner mother to return from Paris.

Chey’s having a pool party for her birthday,” I replied, not bothering to mention it was a party of two. At the sound of Cheyenne’s name, Mum smiled, and I tried not to get my hopes up. “Please, Mum,” I begged in a loud voice. “You never let me go anywhere.” Why do you two want to go swimming anyway when Cheyenne gets all those ear infections?” she continued. “You can’t even swim very well.”

ONYEKA has been a book I've been following since its announcement, from the cover reveal to the Netflix deal, so I've been excited to read this for some time. There are quite a few story developments near the end, some of which I really liked and some of which I didn't, but overall a really solid book and I'm so happy it exists! Brilliant, witty writing and spot-on characterisation.’ Louie Stowell, author of Loki: A Bad God’s Guide to Being Good
