vi) Multiple dials: these include dials with two or more sets of hour lines laid out on multiple plane surfaces, such as diptych dials, polyhedral dials and dials in compendia. Artwork must be a sharp two to five solid color image with no shading, gradients, or shadows. We cannot engrave pictures or gray scale drawings. My method for making and attaching the gnomon is to design it to have two small pegs that will line up with slots in the dial face to keep it in place and properly aligned. With this method it is also possible, and easy, so make several gnomon that can be used interchangeably for either a different look or incase one breaks First, you can apply a finish to the wood to make it look nice and protect it from damage. Again be sure to test your finish on a scrap piece to make sure it will look how you want it to. Also, make sure the compass and gnomon are removed first. You can also paint or carve some designs onto the outside of the two halves. iii) Scaphe dials: the hour lines are inscribed on the inner surface of a spherical or a conical cup. Once you have the wood the way you want it, you should glue down the compass in its hole. The compass and the sundial are two completely different instruments which were built for entirely different uses. The compass is an instrument that is used for navigation and includes a free-floating magnetized needle which, when held level and still, aligns itself with the earth’s magnetic field and in doing so, points approximately north.S. We had the idea from the beginning to cover the dial plate in resin, no matter what design we went with. The thing is, some resins aren't meant for outdoors and the resin we have is one of those. With that being said, we used it anyway. Now next, the direction shown is not calibrating. I have been comparing it with the phone's compass, to see it. But it is still not calibrating properly. Nice sundial!
