v) Azimuthal dials: in this type the dial is oriented in such a way that the sun's shadow falls along a specified line, the hour is then indicated by the needle of an in-built compass.

vi) Multiple dials: these include dials with two or more sets of hour lines laid out on multiple plane surfaces, such as diptych dials, polyhedral dials and dials in compendia. Artwork must be a sharp two to five solid color image with no shading, gradients, or shadows. We cannot engrave pictures or gray scale drawings. The ground beneath your feet is currently rushing eastwards, following a circle around an imaginary line passing through north and south poles. In other words, the Earth is spinning on its axis. At the equator, the ground is moving at around 1600 kilometres per hour, and the further north or south you, go the slower the pace of the spin. Face the gnomon south if you’re in the southern hemisphere. If you live below the equator, you’ll need to point the gnomon of your sundial towards the south, rather than the north. You can use a compass or look for the Southern Cross constellation to find true south and adjust your sundial accordingly. This curious instrument is known as the Byzantine Sundial-Calendar. Dating from around 500 CE, it is the second oldest geared mechanical device ever discovered.

Stonehenge’s function is unclear, but almost all archaeologists agree it was meant to align with the Sun at the summer and winter solstices. ii) Cylinder dials: the surfaces bearing the hour lines can be either convex or concave. A common example of this type is the shepherd's dial. Another term for instruments in this category is pillar dial. Altitude dials: here the time is determined from the sun's altitude (i.e. angle above the horizon). In some cases the dial has to be properly oriented to the compass directions, in other cases the dial has to be aligned to the sun. Portable dials were made in large numbers in the 16th–19th centuries and a fine selection of sundials is on display at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. The Royal Observatory is open daily from 10am The summer solstice is the point in the year when the places where the sun rises and sets are at their furthest points apart on the horizon. It then reverses until—roughly six lunar cycles later in mid-winter—the sunrise and sunset occur closest together. And then they grow further apart again.

My method for making and attaching the gnomon is to design it to have two small pegs that will line up with slots in the dial face to keep it in place and properly aligned. With this method it is also possible, and easy, so make several gnomon that can be used interchangeably for either a different look or incase one breaks First, you can apply a finish to the wood to make it look nice and protect it from damage. Again be sure to test your finish on a scrap piece to make sure it will look how you want it to. Also, make sure the compass and gnomon are removed first. You can also paint or carve some designs onto the outside of the two halves. iii) Scaphe dials: the hour lines are inscribed on the inner surface of a spherical or a conical cup. Once you have the wood the way you want it, you should glue down the compass in its hole. You can use superglue, a hot glue gun, or some epoxy.Pearson, K., 'Walter Frank Raphael Weldon 1860-1906', Biometrika , Vol. 5, No. 1/2. (Oct., 1906), pp.1-52: www.jstor.org Now, you will need to trace the design in pencil and then test your sundial with the pencil lines to make sure it works before making anything permanent. Place it in a safe sunny place like before. After a day of observation, if everything seems to be working as it should, you can now transfer the design to the wooden face. You can also leave a pencil mark next to the compass to indicate where the compass arrow should point for an accurate reading. The compass and the sundial are two completely different instruments which were built for entirely different uses. The compass is an instrument that is used for navigation and includes a free-floating magnetized needle which, when held level and still, aligns itself with the earth’s magnetic field and in doing so, points approximately north.S. We had the idea from the beginning to cover the dial plate in resin, no matter what design we went with. The thing is, some resins aren't meant for outdoors and the resin we have is one of those. With that being said, we used it anyway. Now next, the direction shown is not calibrating. I have been comparing it with the phone's compass, to see it. But it is still not calibrating properly. Nice sundial! These have always fascinated me, and it's nice to see someone come up with something portable and practical :) Please note: Custom engraved items cannot be returned; however, we will repair or replace them, if necessary.
