About this deal

Un botón nos permite anular el destello cuando queramos The built-in flash is the biggest change over the original, which only has a dedicated port – shared with the SX-70 – for fitting either a ‘Flashbar’ module which housed ten flash bulbs (five on each side) or the accessory Q-Light electronic flash unit. Incidentally, the latter has been re-created by MiNT and is available from Polaroid Originals. If the original OneStep’s specifications aren’t especially detailed (even with the benefit of history), they’re positively encyclopedic compared to what’s been published about the new model.

This may change once the wallet-friendly Polaroid Go establishes itself, but for now, Instax is the overall winner in our book. The OneStep+ is every bit the homage to Polaroid’s ’70s-era original, with chunky styling that’s full of retro charm. The original OneStep, unveiled in 1977, was billed as “the world’s simplest camera” because all you had to do was press the shutter button… and the camera did the rest. There were no controls, not even an on/off switch and, while there was an adjustment for exposure, you didn’t necessarily have to use it. The print was automatically ejected via a motorized transport and was self-developing, a big advance on the previous peel-apart Polaroid materials. The square viewfinder gives a fairly close representation of what the lens captures, but with ultra-simple optics, you’ll often find your pics have more in the frame than you expected. The flash is on by default, and while you can turn it off, you’ll really only want to if you’re shooting in very bright sunshine. With several sizes to choose from, as well as an extensive range of compatible cameras, both from Fuji itself and smaller third party manufacturers, Instax is simply the more flexible option.

Probably the most versatile instant camera out there right now. Picture quality might be mixed and film isn’t the cheapest, but the app makes the OneStep+ great fun to use and it looks the part as well. Polaroid OneStep+ – The Rivals On the top you'll see the lever to change between the two focus modes. It has two settings, distant and close. The former is identified with icons showing a tree and two figures, while the latter shows a single figure. You'll want to use the distant setting for most shots, but when leaning in toward a subject you'll want to use the single-person setting.

Polaroid’s I-Type film produces fairly colourful photos, albeit with stark contrast. Still, with enough light the results are charming. Get a snap right and you’ll have a physical memento of those spontaneous moments – which is exactly why instant film has so much appeal. As far as shooting ‘modes’ go, there’s just a slider to make your photos either darker or lighter. Until, that is, you pair the camera to your smartphone over Bluetooth. Polaroid’s Originals app adds a remote trigger, timer shooting, light painting and double exposure modes, as well as manual shooting.

(Image credit: Polaroid / Instax) Fuji has a much more extensive line-up of cameras, divided between Instax Mini, Instax Square and Instax Wide formats. The Instax Mini range has the most affordable and beginner-friendly models, including the Fujifilm Instax Mini 11– which is currently top of our guide to the best instant cameras. The Polaroid OneStep 2 (left) vs the Fujifilm Instax Wide 300 (right). That said, the new i-Type colour film is a significant improvement, not just in terms of the shorter development time and reduced susceptibility to direct light exposure post-camera, but also the image quality, notably both the colour saturation and the contrast. The aperture range isn’t known, nor the shutter speeds, but exposure control is programmed to some extent, including again balancing flash and daylight. According to Polaroid Originals, the shutter is a “custom design using [a] precision step motor”, but that’s as much as they’re giving away. The OneStep+ owes something to the discontinued Impossible I-1, an ambitious offering that was hampered by noisy operation and a battery that had a hard time holding a charge. The OneStep+ has most of the functionality of the I-1, including Bluetooth remote control and a lens that can focus close, but keeps things quieter by using a mechanical lever to adjust focus, and can maintain a charge when stored for a period of months, rather than days with the I-1.Batería de iones de litio recargable a través del puerto micro-USB de la cámara.
