About this deal

In his nonexistent spare time Sebastian's hobbies include hi-fi audio, guitars, and road bikes. Currently investigating time travel. For as long as I can remember, I've had love of all things tech, spurred on, in part, by a love of gaming. I began working on computers owned by immediate family members and relatives when I was around 10 years old. I've always sought to learn as much as possible about anything PC, leading to a well-rounded grasp on all things tech today. In my role at PCMag, I greatly enjoy the opportunity to share what I know.

For GPU dT, the DX averaged 54C. As usual, that’s nearer to average compared to other GPU temperatures on the chart, but still acceptable. The P400A RGB still does better by a couple degrees, as does the NZXT H710, but the only cases that beat it by a large margin are ones with direct GPU cooling like the DIYPC Zondda-O and our custom configuration of the Lian Li O11 XL. CONCLUSION The case offers lighting in two places: the front panel features a pair of frosted ARGB light bars and the inside has a single light strip that provides a subtle, yet pleasing ambiance. Inside the Pure Base 500DX, the PSU and 3.5-inch-drive storage mounts are located in a compartment at the bottom of the case. In addition to making the finished system look cleaner, this design also makes building the computer easier in many ways. Included with the Pure Base 500DX are three ‘Pure Wings 2’ 140 mm fans. While these fans don’t have RGB lighting, what they do offer is an engineered nine-blade design touted to reduce noise-generating turbulence. Equipped with rifle bearings, the Pure Wings 2 provides an operational lifetime of 80,000 hours at a maximum speed of 900 RPM. Power is delivered via a standard 3-pin connecter (DC control) and the speed can be controlled by the motherboards fan speed software. Finally, all Pure Wings 2 fans come with a three-year warranty. This matches the duration of the warranty for the case, so no need to worry about replacing them. With the side panel removed we look at the rear of the chassis and notice the 140 mm rear exhaust fan. Below the fan are seven PCI extension cover plates. Looking inside to the top of the case is the final 140 mm fan. This one is located in the rear position and is set to exhaust. There are provisions for either two 120 mm fans or two 140 mm fans as well as radiators of 280 mm or 240 mm long. Akár további két, 140 mm-es ventilátor is beépíthető.

A be quiet! Pure Base 500DX kiemelkedő hűtési teljesítményével azoknak készült, akik kiváló szellőzésű házat keresnek. All of the storage mounts in this case require you to screw the drives into place. It would have been more convenient to have a toolless mounting system, but I don't see that as often as I used to on cases these days. Fewer parts means less complexity to make, and presumably lower cost, and I suspect the kind of shopper building into a case like this isn't swapping drives in and out all that often. A (Pure) Base Instinct It has been a few months since the launch of be quiet!’s Pure Base 500, a compact ATX enclosure that offers a premium look and feel – as one would expect from a product made by this high-end German manufacturer of cases, coolers, and of course power supplies.

All that said, the price you pay for all of the case’s good qualities is noise. As soon as the Nvidia Founders Edition GPU comes into play it becomes clear why noise-conscious builders would want a more silent chassis. However, most of the time your system will likely be close to idle temperature as you’re browsing the web doing light work. And if you’re willing to spend some time optimizing your fan curves the Pure Base 900DX can be set up to run quietly when it doesn’t have to work hard. Just be aware that if you want this case to run with acceptable noise levels under load, you’ll want to invest in a quiet CPU cooler and a quiet graphics card. The internal layout of the Pure Base 500DX is about as bog-standard as it gets, and that’s a good thing. Gone is the excessive space at the front for external drives and tons of HDDs. There’s room in the front of the upper section of the chassis for mounting two 2.5-inch drives in sight, along with a ‘be quiet!’ embossed cover for hiding away the cables. The rest of the drives can be mounted behind the motherboard tray and in the HDD cage under the PSU shroud, as we’ll detail in a moment. To ensure any change of the ambient temperature in the test room does not adversely affect the results of the test, all average temperature measurements displayed in the comparison data are presented as Delta T, which means we deduct the ambient room temperature from the average component temperature to calculate the Delta. Throughout testing, the ambient temperature of the test room remains between 21-23⁰C.

We’ll start with only the 500-series be quiet! cases, then move on to the comparative charts. The baseline CPU temperature during the first torture test was 49 degrees Celsius over ambient, which only dropped to 45 degrees dT with the removal of the front panel (while leaving the front and top filters in place). The two exhaust fans in the rear of the case are the ones primarily responsible for CPU cooling, and their efficacy isn’t directly dependent on the front panel. Removing just the optional filters from the front and top of the case lowered CPU dT to 47 degrees, not quite as good as removing a whole panel, but much more practical for daily use. Adding another front intake fan to the case had no significant impact on CPU thermals versus baseline for this specific build configuration. The original 500 had a baseline CPU temperature of 66 degrees, massively increased over the DX and hot enough to cause some brief and minor throttling as the logged CPU temperature brushed up against the 100-degree mark. Testing with the mesh top filter instead had a slightly better result with a 64C dT average. Emulating the DX’s three-fan configuration helped slightly more and pushed the average down to 58 degrees over ambient. That’s still much, much worse than baseline for the DX--the front panel really does make the difference. We wouldn’t recommend the non-DX. Now, on to the messy portion of this review. The 15 cable tie points are great, as are the four cable straps, but with only 25 mm of clearance to route everything, this was the most frustrating part of this build. The SSD tray that mounts over the CPU cut-out was fine, but the one that showcases the SSD from the left side of the case was difficult to work with. Connecting two SATA power plugs and two SATA data connectors in that small of an area was quite the chore. If you plan on using this feature, I would highly advise using cables with 90° ends wherever you can. Also, if you try to remove this plate after you’ve routed the motherboard 20+4 pin connector, it’s just not going to happen. Thanks to be quiet! We can use some of the highest quality components on the market for this test. We have a bunch of be quiet! Silent Wings 3 fans of both 120mm and 140mm in size. These are the high-speed Silent Wings 3 fans, which means we have a broader range of speed to decipher the ideal RPM for this experiment. A closer look inside the component chamber reveals an important addition to system cooling with the Pure Base 500DX, beyond the new high airflow front panel design.
