This powerful single malt whisky produced by the only distillery on the Isle of Skye is a very rugged spirit. Talisker is the oldest distillery on the Isle of Skye and for many years was the only one. Looking out over Loch Harport, the distillery was founded in 1830 by the MacAskill brothers and has been producing whisky for almost the entirety of the past two centuries. Now owned by Diageo, the distillery is able to rely on the resources such a corporate conglomerate is able to provide, like access to a host of casks to use in finishing. The Distillers Edition series is a program run by Diageo where standard offerings of a distillery are then further aged in ex-sherry or ex-wine casks. The Talisker Distillers Edition is a Talisker 10 year aged a further 12 months in ex-amoroso sherry casks. Amoroso is a blend out of Jerez, Spain where bodega workers would add a touch of Pedro Ximenez sherry to their bottles of Oloroso sherry, to make it more loveable, or “amoroso,” for their wives. This is similar to a cream sherry. If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. Nose: Iodine right off the bat, nutmeg and cinnamon, less peat coming through than with Talisker 10 or DE, dried seaweed chips. The 2021 Talisker The Distillers Edition is double matured in American oak and ex-Amoroso Sherry casks. Amoroso sherry is a style made by adding some Pedro Xerminez to Oloroso sherry . This is a dark full bodied style that normally has notes of dried fruit, caramel, and nuts. Oloroso is aged at a higher proof to keep flor from forming. Flor is a layer of yeast that can form during fermentation and aging. Oloroso has a high glycerol content that allows it to be perceived as sweeter, even though it is naturally dry.

Seeing as they are the only operational distillery on Skye, one could just as easily make the argument that they produce the worst single malt on the island. I suppose I am choosing to see my Glencairn glass as half full, at least in this case.
