Perhaps the biosphere does not like the idea of 5 billion humans...Nature has interesting ways to balance itself"As of writing this summary, the world is in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the deadly virus rages on and we grapple with the loss of life, we can learn from looking to other disease outbreaks the world has seen previously. I read this book on the same days I was watching the Netflix adaptation of The Haunting of Hill House, which had a curious effect on me. Because, well, the TV show might be very creepy, but I have to say it is nothing compared to the horror of this book. There is evidence that some of the forms this virus comes in actually can be spread through airborne transmission. It’s frightening to imagine a disease like this being as easy to catch as the common cold. A wiki walk can be as refreshing to the mind as a walk through nature in this completely overrated real life outside books:

Since the book is quite dated by now, it is worthwhile reading Preston's update on the latest developments pointed to in the thread below by Sarah. Read the world’s #1 book summary of The Hot Zone by Richard Preston here.In early 2021, following the announcement of a second season with a different story, Tony Goldwyn, [2] Daniel Dae Kim, [2] Harry Hamlin, [5] Dylan Baker, [5] Ian Colletti [6] Dawn Olivieri, [6] and Denyce Lawton [6] were announced as cast members. Yes: it's high time for a de-romanticized, de-mythified, close-up retelling of the U.S. Space Program's launching—the inside story of those first seven astronauts. The Monkey House" chronicles the discovery of Reston virus among imported monkeys in Reston, Virginia, and the following actions taken by the U.S. Army and Centers for Disease Control. It starts with the monkey house receiving a shipment of 100 wild monkeys. After four weeks, 29 of these monkeys have died. This is followed by the veterinarian for the facility, Dan Dalgard, examining the dead monkeys and sending the samples to Peter Jahrling, a virologist at United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases. After seeing a rope-like virus under the microscope, it is suspected that the monkeys were infected with a hot agent similar to the Marburg virus. Jahrling then conducts a blood test to find out that the hot agent is the Ebola Zaire virus. This conclusion leads to the Army Medical Research Institute deciding to euthanize all the monkeys in the same room as the infected monkeys. Jordan, Tina (August 12, 2010). In the next few chapters, Preston describes two outbreaks of Ebola. The first is a Sudan strain of the disease that strikes a quiet storekeeper named Yu G. and spreads throughout his district. Later on, an even more deadly outbreak occurs when dirty needles are used at a medical clinic in various villages across Zaire (now known as Congo). Both outbreaks cause hundreds of deaths, but Preston provides particular details about Mayinga N., who contracts Ebola while working in Ngalemia Hospital and dies after being quarantined in Kinshasa for two days. I read this book years ago, and out of all the things that happened in the book, the prologue with the dude dying from the ebola virus while he was waiting for medical attention and basically literally hemorrhaging/bleeding to death in the waiting room will be forever burned into my brain, the author really described that shit in a way that I could easily picture it in my head. In January 1993, 20th Century Fox producer Lynda Obst won a bidding war for the film rights to Preston's 1992 New Yorker article, which was still being transitioned into book form. [15] In response to being outbid, Warner Bros. producer Arnold Kopelson immediately began working on a similarly themed production. This competing film, Outbreak, would ultimately be a factor in the collapse of Fox's planned production, Crisis in The Hot Zone. [16]Friends Sarah and Ted have both mentioned the aforementioned New Yorker article by Preston, and I myself am very impressed with it, so I'm going to link to it in the review itself; it is here: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/201... A civilian virologist at USAMRIID, Jahrling is one of the first at the Institute to realize that the monkeys at the Reston Primate Quarantine Unit are infected with Ebola. He is an expert on monkey… So where did it come from? Evidence suggests that it may originate from a cave called Kitum Cave in Kenya. In 1980, a man became ill and died of Ebola shortly after visiting the cave. Years later, a young boy visiting the cave with his family also contracted the disease. I also need to have the concept of an Army "mission" explained. "So when the Army decides it wants to do something, it's called a mission. And the mission has a leader. That leader is called a..." oh god kill me now.
