From the winner of the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, the Best Book for Younger Readers - Red House Children's Book Award, the Waterstones Children's Book Prize 5 - 12 year-olds and the Blue Peter Best Story Book Award 2013, comes the ninth amazing instalment of this brilliant series! When a drawing Tom did of a teacher inspired by Buster also goes missing Tom gets worried he may end up in a lot of trouble, did enemy Marcus or Bully Buster have anything to do with this? No, she’s still not looking. Marcus says he’s got five merits as well. “Great,” I say. “We’re like twins now,” says Marcus. (He’s so annoying.) I show Mom and Dad my story because I think they’ll be pleased with me (for a change). 30

I'm TRYING to get voted onto the school council as well - but thanks to the ABOVE list it's not exactly going to plan. Summary: Somewhat of a return to form for Liz Pichon's endless series, with school life and a social problem for our artistic hero combining to make a more than decent plot. She’s not looking. She’s ignoring me. . . . I think. So I might as well stop writing nice things now and draw a doodle instead. (This cheers me up.) Marcus by a gets squished

Tom Gates: Top of the Class (Nearly) is the 9th Tom Gates book and follows Tom as he runs for the school council and TRIES to be top of the class. As per usual things don’t quite go according to plan… If only Tom could follow his own TOP tips for being Top of the Class! 1. Stay awake in lessons (it helps.) 2. Don’t draw HILARIOUS pictures of your teachers. 3. AVOID the class bully to stay out of trouble. 4. Don’t let Mum and Dad write ANYTHING in your school planner. . Don’t let your grumpy sister Delia BOSS you around. (Technically not a school issue - but still important.) Bu T on the other side of me, the good news is I am now sitting next to , w h o i s very smart and nice (even though she didn’t seem thrilled to see me this morning). BriLLIANT At least I can have a sneaky look over her shoulder for a few right answers. I think she is looking at me now. is ve ry nice. 10 Translation missing: en.products.product.price.regular_price Translation missing: en.products.product.price.sale_price It was quite late by the time we got home and there was music out from our house. W Newhich is a TOM GATES WORLD REC ORD . . . . And this is the R EALLY good bit . . . has just arrived too! I am so pleased to see her after the holidays. I smile in what I think is a nice, friendly cheery way. Amy is not impressed. She looks at me like I’m weird (but I’m not). Me smiling HI, Amy! (This is a bad start to my day.) Th en it g ets worse. . . . 5 Tom gets into running for school council in this book however when he spots school bully Buster doing graffiti, Tom tells his best mate Derek via drawing and soon things get out of hand as people find out and spread it round. ven though I only live four minutes away from my school, I’m often late. MY school To MY house (Oakfield) O Cheap Street C 24 a s t l e TwRoomai nu d SHOP t e s akfield Another Pe rcy St ree t ch o o l STOP! m inut es to s t w o This is usually because me and Derek (my best mate and next-door neighbor) \"chat” L OTa bit (OK, a ) on the way. Sometimes it’s because we get distracted by delicious fruit chews and caramel wafers at the shop. Occasionally, it’s because I’ve had loads of other very important things to do. 2 My favourite part was when a bully called Buster Jones drew on the teachers pictures and made them look goofy (one was a pirate). My favourite character is Buster because he is always up to mischief or in trouble. So, in this story Tom tried to be a school council and id a very cool design to make people vote for him. He said ,"Monday will be Funday, Tuesday will be you chose day (wear what you want), Wednesday is pen day (doodles and drawings), Thursday is furs day (when you bring in your animals) and Friday will be surprise day (such as extra pudding or much more bigger portions to eat at lunch). And guess what Tom got voted as school council and achieved top marks in his test. Ocr_converted abbyy-to-hocr 1.1.20 Ocr_module_version 0.0.17 Old_pallet IA18213 Openlibrary_edition

ri iantB LL ! MY Favorite! oHooroarya,yH, oHooroarya,yH, ooray! H H H o o r ay ! o o r ay !! H o o r ay (I've suddenly cheered up.) 42 It a good book and I read it a lot.I would recommend it to all ages and it’s interesting of what he does a school and try’s to reach’s all the way to the go of the class This year, Dad said, “Let’s go camping, it’s cheap.” Mom didn’t seem that keen, but I’d never been camping before, so I was looking forward to it. Dad and I went to the camping shop to buy a few essential items like: \"W e won’t need much,” 1. Tent he said. Dad 2. Sleeping bags 3. Cooking stuff 4. Fishing rods 5. TV 6. Computer But the camping shop had some cool stuff, LOTand Dad got carried away. He spent a of money and made me promise not to tell Mom. “We could have stayed in a nice hotel; it would have been cheaper,” Dad said. “Not the same as sleeping under the stars and waking up in the fresh air!” said the man in the shop as he took Dad’s m o n ey . 16 I really enjoyed the book.Tom Gate’s books always have lots of unexpected twists. My favorite part was when Tom and his family figured out that they were staying in the wrong place. It is a really good fiction book. I loved this book. I liked it when Tom lost his drawing of Mr fullerman with a big bum and got scared that a teacher would find it and show it to Mr fullerman and he would get a detention, I found it really funny that they then found the drawing in a book in the library. Great story.

The Tapper Twins Go to War (With Each Other) by Geoff Rodkey and its sequel are forming themselves into a brilliant series for the same age group – and for those with the same brief visual attention span. My thoughts: Then Derek comes over (he’s in Mrs. Worthington’s class, not mine, because we chat too much). I’ve seen him loads during t he s u mme r. (H i s h a i r h a s grown — h e hasn’t.) I show him my ideas and drawings for a band name. (He likes DOGZOMBIES best . . . me, too.) When Marcus Meldrew barges into our chat. . . . “What’s that?” “Ideas for our band.” “What band?” “Me and Derek are in a band, and we’re thinking of what to call ourselves.” “That’s easy.” “Really?” (Marcus has an idea.) 33 It sounds like you had a very eventful time, Tom! Y“ eah. . . . Just call yourselves 'Th e Tot a l Lo s e rs .' Ha ! Ha ! Ha ! '' s ay s M a rc us . . . who's even more annoying this year than he was last year (if that’s possible). Marcus Ha! Ha! being a Ha! TWIT T he re 's hom ew o rk a l ready fro m M r. Fullerman. (It’s like we never had a holiday.) 34 However, I did like how their was a bully in the story. It gave the novel a feeling of realism and something that all kids experience at some point. You don’t actually need to even have read the previous 8 books, because this reads easily by itself (although I WILL be reading the previous 8 books simply because of how amazing this one was). 8-12 year old children will absolutely gobble this up - it’s so easy to digest, with tons of learning opportunities for new words to extend kids’ vocabulary. This is my kind of book: hilarious, enjoyable and very creative. The author kept me hooked throughout with the funny plots and cleverly drawn illustrations – which to me is what makes this series of books. One of the many plots I found enjoyable was when one of the characters, Buster Jones, draws all over the class cabinet where all the teachers’ faces were and drew moustaches, fangs and horns on them. I also loved the bit where Tom draws a picture of his teacher, Mr Fullerman, with a big bottom and calls him “Mr FullerBUM”. The characters were spot on and reminded me of people in my old school. A great read. I cant WAIT for the next one. Good things: When Liz was little, she loved to draw, paint and make things. Her mum used to say she was very good at making a mess (which is still true today!). She kept drawing and went to art school, where she earned a degree in graphic design. She worked as a designer and art director in the music industry, and her freelance work has appea MoreSomeone called Buster Jones gets detention but it gets longer and longer because he does silly things such as climbing out the window to escape the detention and then drawing rude graffiti of the teachers. I “ t looks like Marcus,” Derek laughs. “Or Norman Watson on candy!” I say. “Bet it belongs to a little new kid who doesn’t know any better!” says Derek. “What kind of person would have a stupid-looking bike like that?” I laugh. Ha! HHaa! ! HHaa!! HHaa! ! Ha! We both laugh! But is NOT laughing Tu T Tu T because it’s her bike. School janitor Stan is shaking his head and tutting in a disapproving way (which is making his keys jangle) because I have upset Amy (AGAIN!). She calls me an and takes her bike away. I say “Sorry,” but Amy ignores me. (She ignored my five merits, too.) It’s been a terrib le day . 39
