About us". Westmorland Gazette . Retrieved 16 July 2018. The Westmorland Gazette, 1 Wainwright's Yard, Kendal A walk can be what you make it – you can walk the dog, walk the kids to school or simply go for a walk in your lunch break; whatever it is you’re always winning. For those who want to add that little bit more; a slightly more strenuous, time-consuming adventure, Alfred Wainwright has done the hard work for you. All you have to do is walk.John Burland, founder of the Wainwright Society, wrote and devised a dramatic presentation of his life and works which was presented at the Wildman Theatre at Ilkley Playhouse as part of the Ilkley Literature Festival on 15 October 2009. During 2010 and 2011 a further 17 presentations were made. High Street, so-called for the Roman Road that once traversed the summit, is a popular choice among walkers. It’s long, flat and great for a brisk march, unencumbered by obstacles. He also admitted that Blencathra is “most of all a mountaineers’ mountain”, probably because of its regular stretches of scramble and rough terrain. That being said, it’s an accessible spot near the motorway and is more manageable to non-mountaineers than Wainwright would have you know. There are, for example, varied routes, with Hall’s Fall being a particular favourite among tourists.

In this book you’ll find 64 routes that, if you complete them all, by default you will also have completed the Wainwrights. A few of the summits are featured in more than one walk. That’s ok. Wainwright felt that, although Castle Crag wasn’t technically a fell, he couldn’t help but include it because of its rugged beauty. And quite right too. There’s something uniquely interesting about it. All is quiet here,” he wrote, “ and only the rising larks disturb the stillness. A pleasant place but- to those unfortunate folk with no imagination – so dull!”

According to Wainwright, in his autobiography Fellwanderer, he initially planned the series for his own interest rather than for publication. When he published his first book it was privately, as he could not face the prospect of finding a publisher. His friend Henry Marshall, Chief Librarian of Kendal and Westmorland, took charge of publicity and administration, and his name appears as publisher on the early impressions. Another friend, Sandy Hewitson (of Bateman and Hewitson Ltd), agreed to print the books using Wainwright's original manuscript, although the printing was done by the Westmorland Gazette in Kendal, who had taken over Bateman and Hewitson Ltd. From 1963, the Westmorland Gazette became his publisher, and its name appears on the first impressions of Books Six and Seven. Wainwright's books were in turn taken over by Michael Joseph in the 1990s. When they ceased publication in 2003, [10] the rights were bought by Frances Lincoln. [11] But to save you time sifting through his catalogue of routes, we thought we’d bring together our top ten Wainwright Lake District walks, each offering something slightly different, so that, whatever your ability or taste, you’ll be sure to find something to suit you. 1.
