About this deal

Hasbro’s 60-year-old board game of military control is being brought into the grimdark future of Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40K. In a world of big box games with high concept themes and bags of miniatures, it can be easy to underestimate an old hoofer like Risk. Thankfully, Warhammer Quest came along to buff out some of the original HeroQuest’s rough edges and show us how to do the thing right. Originally released in 1995, it went out of production in 1998 until a 2016 revitalization in the form of Warhammer Quest Silver Tower. Designed for two players, this game sees one player control an elite Deathwatch Kill Team as they descend into the bowels of a mining planet that has become infected with Genestealers. Coming in halfway between a war game and a board game, Deathwatch: Overkill is a masterclass in design. Choose from Ultramarines, Iyanden Eldar, Evil Sunz Orks, and the crazed Chaos Space Marines of the World Eaters, to battle it out in a game that stands as one of the highest-rated board games that bears the Warhammer name.

Play is for between two and five players. A two-player option with a third ‘neutral’ non-player nation is available. There is no mechanism for it, but the game does encourage alliances, truces and ganging-up in the meta-game, all of which is much more satisfyingly complex with a higher player count. During the set-up for Risk you take it in turns to claim territories, by placing one of your army pieces in it, across the game board until all the territories are claimed. Then play begins. Today, we have a look at how the classic game adapts to the grimdark universe of Warhammer 40,000 to see if once and for all one of the setting’s myriad factions can claim total supremacy in a galaxy ripped apart by war. Warhammer 40,000: Risk Review – Unboxing The Warhammer 40K Risk game comes with a custom board to show the planet, 225 faction tokens as well as the 5 leader tokens. Once all the territories have been claimed, players continue to place their armies in territories they control until all their starting armies have been placed. You’ll get 5 dice with the game, 40 territory cards, 20 objective cards and 16 reward cards as well as a physical copy of the rules in the box.A player is defeated when they have lost all of their territories. Should all of their coloured pieces be removed from the board, they are removed from the game. With that done, players must then shuffle the Minor and Major Reward Cards and leave them face-up in two piles next to the gaming board. When players complete objectives, they will be able to claim a reward Card of their choice from the top of the pile.

We’ll have a closer look at everything in the box in a moment. Warhammer 40,000: Risk Review – Contents There have been several releases named after Warhammer’s Horus Heresy saga – but2010’s Horus Heresy The Board Gameis, for our money, one of the best that Games Workshop has produced. Next, players need to shuffle the Territory Cards and leave them in a pile near the board. Territory cards are then allocated to players as follows/as applicable: In this Risk game, custom sculpted units will allow you to control the key locations in your bid to rule the planet!Setting Up Warhammer 40,000: Risk isn’t too difficult. There are a few steps to follow, but the Instruction Manual walks you through them. Finally, now each player has a faction, players are allocated their armies for deployment. Army size varies depending on how many people are playing (5 players – 20 armies each; 4 players – 25 armies each; 3 players – 30 armies each). Starting with the first player, players take it in turns to place a single army into a territory of their choosing until all the territories have been claimed.
