About this deal

It concludes with an ending that will bring a tear to many readers’ eyes. Recommended for upper KS2. Not only is Noah to be evacuated to Cornwall, along with Clem, his best mate, and the rest of the children in his school, but everyone has been advised to have their pets put to sleep, prioritising the needs of the people of Britain in this time of chaos– but Noah has different ideas... Dealing with all the animals is a mission in itself, let alone avoiding trouble on the filthy waters of the Thames and the police on the riverbanks. A snake needs to be kept warm. Dogs and kittens need food and water, as does an often cantankerous donkey. But these animals are all important parts of their plan and their escape to a rumoured animal haven.

This book seemed like the kind of book that I would absolutely love, and it has received so much praise. The novel is partly based on true events: until I read this book, I had never heard of the cull of British pets at the start of the Second World War. PERFECT FOR: Chapter-by-chapter teaching resources with creative writing tasks and extra-curricular opportunities Night Mayor Franklefink has vanished from the Transylvanian Express - and it's up to you to solve the case! Part of the Solve Your Own Mystery seri... Was this the first time you've based a story on a true story? What difference does it make to what you're writing?Hello Yellow - 80 Books to Help Children Nurture Good Mental Health and Support With Anxiety and Wellbeing - One of the harshest aspects of the book for a modern reader is reading how children of the time were treated; how well do you think today's child would cope in 1940s Britain? An enjoyable read that provoked some interesting discussions with 9 year old daughter. Shifts in setting and number of characters a bit of a barrier to emotional depth of ‘When the Sky Falls’.

As his dad marches off to fight, Noah makes him a promise, to keep their beloved family dog safe. When the government advises people to have their pets put down in readiness for the chaos of war, hundreds of thousands of people do as they are told. But not Noah. He’s not that sort of boy. With his two friends in tow, he goes on the run, to save his dog and as many animals as he can. No matter what.

War is coming. Everybody says so. Noah doesn’t like his dad leaving to fight Hitler, but must accept it. Just before he leaves, Dad makes a deal with Noah. If Noah looks after their much loved dog, Winn, Dad will be sure to come home again. Noah takes the deal seriously, not knowing what’s coming. As Noah Price’s dad marches off to fight, he asks his son to honour one vital promise: that he will keep their dog, Winn, safe. No matter what. Noah agrees, but his best intentions are crushed when the government advises people to have their pets put to sleep as part of the war preparations. Children are heartbroken, queues outside vets’ surgeries stretch for miles. But Noah is a resourceful and impetuous child. He won’t just do what he is told. Far from it. Peggy and Beau are inseparable: the only thing that can ever come between them is war. Peggy is evacuated to the safety of the coast, but Beau is left behind in the city, where he becomes the most extraordinary and unlikely of war heroes. Until The Road Ends While the Storm Rages is an emotion-driven story, full of the strength of children in crisis – the story of a boy’s love for his dog in the midst of a crumbling world and far too many goodbyes. I’m working on a middle grade historical fiction book myself and so have recently bought up a number of recently published ones to learn from. Hands down this is the best one I’ve read so far.

Suitable for a slightly younger audience than When the Sky Falls, children from Year 3 upwards would engage well with this story. There is so much scope for discussion. Was the government right in their advice? Should Noah have runaway with the animals? What would you do in this situation? Adults need to be aware that the book includes sensitively described animal death and parts of the adventure are quite tense. There is a real sadness that children may find challenging as they become a part of the story. This opportunity for the development of empathy will be powerful. From the best-selling and multi-award-winning author, Phil Earle, comes a second masterly story all about bravery, wartime, loyalty and the much-needed companionship of pets. From the bestselling author of When the Sky Falls: The Times Children's Book of the Year, winner of the Books Are My Bag Readers Award for Children’s Fiction, w inner of the British Book Award for Children's Fiction Book of the Year and shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. I really enjoyed reading this book which as well as being 'historical' fiction, is also a great adventure story. I was fascinated to learn it was inspired by true events in WW2 Britain. I really enjoyed reading this - the pacing and tone of the book was so perfectly balanced. Noah was such a likable voice - he had such a big heart with such a lightness to his view of life. He was faced with a difficult trial, but Phil Earle kept his youthful spirit alive with funny quips that you couldn't help but cheer along with him and pray that he'd be successful in his endeavors, particularly this one scene, where he attempted to keep his dog safe at a shelter, only to see the number of children already waiting in line

While the Storm Rages is the eagerly awaited new novel from the bestselling author of When the Sky Falls: The Times Children's Book of the Year, winner of the Books Are My Bag Readers Award for Children's Fiction, winner of the British Book Award for Children's Fiction Book of the Year and shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. It's the Second World War and while everyone else is evacuated to the countryside, 12-year-old Joseph ends up in the city with a woman who owns a zoo.A beautifully written historical adventure story, which will take readers on an emotional and exciting journey. I had always known that during World War II, families in England sent their children away to the countryside to protect them from the fear of a bomb onslaught, but While the Storm Rages gave me an emotional glimpse into what happens to the beloved pets of these children, who have to make the difficult decision to leave them behind in the most unfathomable possible way. It showed a brutal side to war that I had never stopped to think about. With a light-hearted humorous but still heartfelt touch, Phil Earle swept me away on incredible adventure of one boy's fierce determination to protect the things that matter most to him. After three years at Ottakar’s, he became a sales rep, and then a key account manager for Transworld/Random House, and is now sales director at Simon and Schuster Children’s Books.Firstly, I'd like to start off by saying an enormous 'thank you' to both the author, Phil Earle, and the wonderful publishing team at Andersen Press for gifting me with an advanced reading copy, in exchange for an honest review. This terrible heart-wrenching cull came about because the National Air Raid Precautions Animals Committee (NARPAC) instrumented a public information campaign that caused a reaction among anxious Britons that can only be described as patriotic panic. The advice it gave pet owners left nothing to chance: "If at all possible, send or take your household animals into the country in advance of an emergency. If you cannot place them in the care of neighbours, it really is kindest to have them destroyed." You can read more on this in Bonzo's War by Clare Campbell. I have to be honest and say I'm not a big one for research. I'm impatient to get writing, and I'm a pretty reluctant reader, or at least a very choosy one. If I'm researching I tend to go to documentaries or films. I did do a lot of googling of London in the Blitz, which was really useful. I really like working from visual things like photos.
