Design research studio Formafantasma – Wallpaper* Designers of the Year 2021– teamed up with crystal glass manufacturer Lobmeyr to bring the X Muse Helicon tasting workshops to life, creating elements such as glassware, bottles, glorifiers, tableware and containers for presenting ingredients. The studio also created the X Muse Temple, the physical embodiment of the brand. Founders Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin sought to avoid ‘certain clichés in the world of alcohol’ and instead sensitively ritualise the ‘good side of drinking’. ‘There is this part of alcohol that should be recognised and not necessarily seen as evil. This is a way of celebrating this,’ says Farresin.

Having experimented and re-engineered, pushing beyond common traditions to create an augmented spirit that is dedicated to providing an intense and elevated experience, it has creatively blended a combination of heritage barley and the purest water to create a one-of-a-kind vodka. Vodka has practically no calories. Unlike calorific beer and wine, vodka is one of the skinniest spirits on the shelf. According to Bodyline Clinic, a single 25ml shot carries around 110 calories. Add diet tonic water, soda water or a diet coke to keep your serve light. As a vodka to sip and savour with a multi-layered design and brand identity, X MUSE aims to create moments of connection, where the world pauses and drinkers can experience concentrated emotion known to X MUSE as ‘ambromoments’ (from the Greek word ambrotos, “immortal”). The brand illustration, by sought-after graphic design studio A Practice For Everyday Life, reinterprets an icon by 16th century philosopher and alchemist Dr John Dee and takes inspiration from art by pioneering 20th century artist Marcel Duchamp. Each element of the illustration is made up of four strokes, referencing the four elements in nature, the four stages of distillation and the four dimensions (three spatial and one temporal). In partnership with specialists at Heriot-Watt University two heritage varieties of barley, Plumage Archer and Maris Otter were selected. They are distilled separately and combined in precise quantities. This careful orchestration of barleys, prized for their taste, creates a smooth and complex flavour. Vodka is made from potatoes. Spuds are the famous baseline ingredient, but vodka can be made from wheat, grain and fruit too. At an average of 40 per cent ABV, you probably can’t claim it as one of your five-a-day though.
