About this deal

My first paid writing gig was for a listings magazine in Birmingham — (Actually my first unpaid writing gig was an interview with Kitchens of Distinction for Salford Student Magazine. I can’t begin to tell you how terrible it was.) Romanong Kurong from PhilippinesThe guitar introduction thrills me to no end. The low vocals—“this is for all the lonely people, thinking that life has passed them by”—never allowed me to know why I was literally lonely in those days after my mother died.

Yet loneliness is not especially a phenomenon of the elderly. The polling found no clear link between age and loneliness in America or Britain—and in Japan younger people were in fact lonelier. Young adults, and the very old (over-85s, say) tend to have the highest shares of lonely people of any adult age-group. Other research suggests that, among the elderly, loneliness tends to have a specific cause, such as widowhood. In the young it is generally down to a gap in expectations between relationships they have and those they want. Are there things non-immigrants can be aware of or do today to help immigrants transition to life in a new country? I loved the writing, the characters and just how real the storyline was. This NEEDS to be made into a movie ... it's heartbreaking, and yet, it's also just so beautiful.

Is your heart filled with pain?

Ashleigh was just annoying and pushy.... and leaving her adored baby girl with a virtual stranger? Really?? This book is filled with happy heartwarming moments but also sad heartbreaking moments that had me sobbing. It also had some unexpected moments which took me by surprise and made the reading experience that much better.

One in four UK adults (25%) say they have felt lonely some or all of the time over the last month, according to a survey of 6,000 UK adults 2 commissioned by the Mental Health Foundation. I was also born in Birmingham — in my humble opinion the greatest city in the world with the nicest people too. Along the way he pals up with Jan, a divorcee craving companionship, and reignites an old friendship with a fellow Jamaican immigrant, Gus, also living alone and suffering with his mental health. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. The protagonist of Mike Gayle's novel All the Lonely People is a member of the "Windrush generation," which refers to people from the Caribbean who emigrated to the United Kingdom between 1948 and 1971.The topic of "loneliness" is a key component in this story. The author does an amazing job of covering the many different aspects of this topic, how it can impact many us at different times in our lives and in so many different ways. Others are sure that technology can reduce loneliness. On the top of a hill in Gjøvik, a two-hour train-ride from Oslo, lives Per Rolid, an 85-year-old widowed farmer. One daughter lives nearby, but he admits feeling lonely. So he has agreed to take part in a trial of Komp, a device made by No Isolation, a startup founded in 2015. It consists of a basic computer screen, a bit like an etch-a-sketch. The screen rotates pictures sent by his grandchildren, and messages in large print from them and other kin. The trio met with George Martin in Los Angeles, at the offices of America's managers, Geffen-Roberts. Peek remembered with a laugh: "The first thing he did was take his shirt, sweater and shoes off. He said it was too hot in L.A. He put everyone at ease, and we just got along well from the first second. He has a very musical mind, and as we began working we bounced ideas off of him quite a bit, with things like vocal arrangements and guitar parts. It was an amazing experience working for a mind-producer." consider visiting places where you can just be around other people – for example, a park, the cinema or a cafe Karen is 55. She was recently widowed and lives alone while her son is at university. She was diagnosed with ME / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome two years ago.

For Hubert, it was the death of his daughter that led him to a life of loneliness. Who in your life inspires you to live life to the fullest? We have two timelines going on here. In the first, Hubert is in his early twenties and makes the journey from Jamaica to the UK to start a new life. We see him disembark the boat and experience life in London. The racism, the hostile attitudes which only increase when he starts a relationship with a white woman, Joyce. I learned something new from this read and I love when that happens. Hubert Bird and other characters in this book are from the "Windrush Generation" in the UK: "...The British government looked to its overseas colonies for help and encouraged migration in an effort to fill many job vacancies post WWII." This book portrays the many challenges Jamaican immigrants experienced in Britain during this time period. This means, first, screening its 150,000 patients for loneliness. Those at risk are asked if they want to enroll in a “Togetherness Programme”. This involves phone calls from staff called “connectors” who help with transport to events and ideas for socialising. Patients are coaxed to visit clinics, even when not urgently ill, to play games, attend a “seniors’ gym” and just chat.At least that’s what he tells his daughter Rose when she calls each week from Australia. The truth is, other than trips to the store and the vet for his cat, he barely sees or speaks to anyone. Dotty, Dennis, and Harvey don't even exist. Hubert is tremendously lonely, but he can’t let Rose know or she’ll worry. I liked this one. It is definitely a character driven story. The MC, Hubert, was a great character and he was worth getting to know. He was wonderfully drawn. He had his heart in the right place and he also had some mighty big walls protecting it. I liked the way that element ebbed and flowed throughout. The other characters were also fun to get to know and they all felt purposeful. Mark Rowland, Chief Executive of the Foundation said: “We know some people are at a higher risk of loneliness than others. That’s why we need a fairly funded public mental health approach, that recognises these differences and targets action accordingly. The mental health impacts of loneliness must be taken seriously and tangible policy changes and investment decisions made to reduce loneliness and to improve people’s connections with one another.”
