About this deal

When a match occurs, the players with the matching cards must attempt to come up with a word or phrase that is reflected on their opponent’s card.

A recent study presented pictures and cues to people with aphasia in a way that closely resembled the methods used by Naming Therapy (van Hees, 2013). Tactus Therapy Solutions has therefore developed an app to help both clinicians and families with naming therapy. We have loved Anomia for years – even before we started reviewing games in 2015. So I was really excited to see a new version, although I was a little nervous about what “pop culture” might mean. I’m really not good with knowing pop musicians and actors. When the Draw Piles are depleted, the person with the most cards in their Winning Pile wins the round. To read more about the studies that have provided the evidence on which Naming Therapy is based, please look at the following references:However, even with that little downside chances are you won’t be playing it every day for weeks on end, so that may not be a worry at all. Rather, plays of it will be spaced far enough apart that we’ll get to experience that anxious brain-freeze all over again. Decades of research have looked at how teaching people to think about the semantic properties of a wordhelps them whentrying to retrieveit. Semantic feature analysis (SFA)is a classic therapy technique that’s proven very effective (Boyle, 2010). When the draw piles are empty, the person with the most cards in their winning pile wins the game. Expectations We knew we wanted to play this game with at least some of our kids, too. We did expect there to be some difficulties with domain knowledge across generations. The player who finishes blurting out a correct answer first wins the Face-Off. The winner takes the loser's top card and places it, face-down, in their separate Winning Pile. The winner's top card stays where it is.

Anomia Kids is an award-winning family game with an amusingly alliterative twist just for kids! Everyone from pre-readers to adults can enjoy the zany, high-energy fun of ANOMIA—no reading required! Note: You should only have one face-up card showing at a time. If it's your turn and you already have a card in play, flip the new card on top of your existing card. This pile of cards is your Play Pile. Collect your opponent's card if you answer first and correctly. If you blurt out a correct example of the person, place or thing on your opponent's card before they come up with one for yours, you win the "face off." There may be a fewww more things to think about, but you will need to give the game a play for yourself to find those out! I hope you enjoy getting your brain working, more than usual.

End of the Game

In the fact that this is a super simple game, there is one thing that may confuse you. Although, your brain is pretty powerful, so maybe not. There is something called a 'wild card'. I know, sounds scary. The wild cards allow for the non matching symbols to match which will increase the number of things which you MUST be paying attention to. After playing Anomia a number of times, I think you could add to those definitions, “4) The party game where people jump out of their chairs, point frantically, stutter in loud outbursts, and experience brain-freeze.” Notice that the card displays some text and a symbol. (If any Wild Cards are drawn in the next few steps, set them aside and draw again, we'll get to Wild Cards in #7). This continues until two symbols match, with players continuing to add to their pile so only the top card is currently visible. Anomia, or the inability to recall words and names, is one of the most common, persistent, and frustrating aspects of aphasia for a person who has suffered a stroke.

Naming Practice, the first and most frequently used activity in Naming Therapy, uses an evidence-based technique known as cued naming. While many types of cues have been studied over the years, the evidence points to cueing hierarchies with multi-modal cues as the most effective to aid word retrieval. I think I might prefer Anomia Party Edition because it has so many more cards, but I wouldn’t mind mixing some of the Pop Culture in for some really funny moments. That sounds good. Anomia is a super easy game to play and understand. So, if you have 2-5 people with you (plus yourself of course), ready to get their board gaming hats on, this game is perfect for you all! Anomia is clever in the fact that it knows that our minds are always thinking about something. What are you thinking about right now? I bet you’re thinking about nothing now that I’ve made you ACTUALLY question yourself. But that’s the thing, you are still thinking of something, even if not subconsciously. I know. The brain is a powerful thing. Anomia Kids is simple to play. Draw a card and flip it over for all to see. Does the colored symbol on your card match another player’s? If so, be the first to shout a word that starts with the same sound as the image on your opponent’s card. Easy, right? Beware – you may find that your brain can do some pretty silly things under pressure! Boyle, M. (2010). Semantic feature analysis treatment for aphasic word retrieval impairments: What’s in a name? Topics in Stroke Rehabilitation, 17(6), 411–422.If you opt for the 'no repeat' rule the following applies: Once an example is uttered, whether in play or in conversation, it may NOT be used to win a Face-Off during that round/sitting. The exception to this is when the same answer is appropriate for a different card.
