About this deal

Take a glance through amber-tinted glasses to explore a huge range of our favorite drams, from the peaty Laphroaigs to the smooth Balvenie and the unconventional Teelings. After my father passed in 2009 I eventually found myself exploring his modest but eclectic collection of spirits and cordials. Most prominent was a nearly half full 1.5 liter bottle of Ballentine’s that I deducted hailed from the early to mid 70s. I assumed it had to have gone to pot, for no specific informed reason. But when I twisted open the cap I was greeted by a rich fragrance which grew in depth and power as it permeated my inner cavities. Whoa, I said to the bottle. Finally, the liquid is left to mature in casks. The spirit must mature in casks for a minimum of three years before it’s legally allowed to be called whisky in Scotland.

I have really weird experience. I too wanted to do side by side. So I acquired JW Red from 60s and bouht current one. In no way old one was sweet. But strangely both were similar in flavour profile. The older was a bit better but really close to current one. If I was to rate current one (think any number) than the old would be +1 max +2. That impression is even stronger taking a sip, so strong that I actually needed to re-read the label to make sure I didn’t grab a bourbon instead. The vanilla and brown sugar flavors seem to be the biggest and boldest in the room, giving it an immediate sweet and delicious flavor that you’d expect from something American rather than something from the old country. As that flavor fades a bit, you can see some of the more traditional blended whisky notes making an appearance, specifically some peat smoke on the finish that lasts into the aftertaste. I will tell you though, newer Ballantine’s has its place: its place is in my heart, after making a swift journey down my esophagus. I was recently involuntarily in East Africa for a long while, and Ballantine’s was basically the go-to Scotch if you didn’t want to shell out ridiculous sums for well-known brands. This is a bit strange, since usually with the addition of some ice any bitterness or unpleasantness disappears. In this case, though, the ice actually brings out those malicious elements.A popular choice for whisky novices and experts alike, Johnnie Walker takes the crown again and again for its unrivaled spirits. It’s the world’s most widely distributed brand of Scotch, which means it’ll be a success no matter what occasion you bring it out for.

It is August 2022. I have just opened and drank some Ballantine’s I bought at discount at a Morrisons in Bradford. The world of whisky can sometimes be obscure to the uninitiated. Here are the most important terms you need to know when shopping for whisky. I have just used a 1970’s 43% Ballantines in this months Whisky tasting and it also went down very well. I have some 70’s and 80’s 12,15,17,21 and 30 year old expressions too which at one point in the future would love to do a tasting all together to see if we can really tell the difference? This Speyside whisky is another great choice from Balvenie’s offerings. It’s a classic after-dinner malt with a richness and complexity stemming from its second distillation in sherry casks. There’s not a whole lot of information about the source of this whisky, which is common for blended scotch such as this.Glenfiddich’s focus as a brand is on creating “the best dram in the valley,” so it’s easy to — rightly — assume that any bottle will be a crowd-pleaser. It’s also the world’s most awarded single malt, offering a range of bottles at a medium price point that’s easily accessible for all. But you caught on the wrong end. My point was that some original bottlings (at least indistinguishable) can contain undrinkable liquid. If you want the best value for money with your next bottle of Scotch whisky, the safest bet is Macallan 12 Year Double Cask. An accessible drink, both for the pallet and your wallet, yet complex and rich in taste. I poured a couple fingers into one of the small leaded crystal tasting cups and the fragrance fully bloomed into a wonderfully evocative symphony of classic whiskey purfumes. Whoa, I again nodded to the imposing bottle. So then I sipped it and my mouth flooded with some of the most satisfyingly balanced flavors I’d yet experienced in my admittedly meager whiskey history. But I had sampled fine 12 and 18 year old Single Malts and Blends and so I had at least a working knowledge of what to expect of a fine or even finer dram. This one certainly deserved consideration among that higher pedigree class, it was so delightfully smooth and subtle yet seductively complex.
