About this deal

I would even say the same for true 10bit end to end communication (Photoshop 10bit and that stuff)… a dithered 8bit communication ( or 10bit comunication dithered to 8bit in some step) should be visually equivalent: Lightroom, CaptureOne and ACR, all use dithered outputs, all render “10bit test ramp” smooth. You just need to ensure that your calibration caused no banding (realiable HW cal or good GPU)

BenQ SW271 Monitor Review - Photography Life

First of all, thanks Nasim for such a thorough review. I already own SW271 and recently started to use it for photo editing. I noticed, however, that my images are much brighter on the screen than on my other devices (MacBook Air, Pro, iPhone 9, OnePlus8), also my prints come out a lot darker than what I can see on screen. I suppose this is due to brightness and contrast settings that I can’t really get to their correct point. This is a bit of an issue as my editing style is low key and rather leans towards darker side of the spectrum. Can you suggest values for brightness and contrast in Adobe RGB and sRGB modes, please? As far as 27-inch professional photo monitors are concerned, the BenQ SW271 still has excellent affordability on its side, but more significantly it has a 4K resolution display, a more flexible set of inputs and some additional operating conveniences to assist with workflow efficiencies. The SW271C has a 27-inch display with 3840x2160 (UHD) resolution. It's using an IPS panel for wide viewing angles, and its matte finish helps reduce glare from overhead lights. A shade hood is included, with all the parts for a horizontal or vertical orientation. The display is, as expected, downright gorgeous. It's mostly the same as the older SW271, with 100% sRGB, 100% AdobeRGB, and 95% DCI-P3 color reproduction, as measured with a SpyderX Pro colorimeter. The connection options comprise a pair of HDMI ports (Version 2.0), Display Port, USB 3.0 (upstream for hubbing) and USB Type C plus a 3.5mm stereo audio headphone output. Two downstream USB 3.0 ports are located on the rear left side of the monitor along with a slot for SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards which, apart from the convenience factor, also frees up one of the main USB ports for the great many photographers using this format. A circular port in the support column serves as a cable run to keep everything tidy. PerformanceExcellent color accuracy and uniformity are the core of any good photo editing monitor, but BenQ has also baked in a few nice-to-have features that didn’t exist in the previous model. For photographers, two are worth diving into a bit deeper. Third-Party Hardware Calibration Support Viewing angles are 178 degrees for both vertical and horizontal, which is very good. Although the viewing angle is typical for a high-end display using IPS panel technology, those who are used to the older TN panel technology will be impressed by the difference this makes. Colour and brightness remain fairly consistent, although can change towards the left and right if you are not positioned in front of the middle of the monitor.

However, greys are good, with them looking grey, with minimal tint, unless you've moved the image to the left or right of the screen. We found the best colour results were from using a calibration device in combination with the Palette Master Element software, which meant the software was able to write the calibration results to the monitor's LUT. Overall, it looks like the uniformity results for the SW271 looks pretty decent, especially when compared to the BenQ SW320 that demonstrated fairly poor uniformity, particularly in the corners. Still, I did not expect to see a sharp drop in uniformity right outside the center zone – as you can see, the right side of the center area looks quite a bit different. Regarding] photo editing, we already have our own [Palette Master Element] software, which supports X-Rite and Datacolor calibrators,” said a spokesperson. “This is why at this moment we don’t have plans to support i1 Profiler or Spyder software to do hardware calibration.”

Additional Features

You can use software calibration with X-Rite i1 profiler and other apps. Only Lightspace and CalMAN support full access for adjusting monitor color properties. Learn more Response time is 5ms grey-to-grey, which should be good for video (and gaming), as response times below 8ms are generally considered good by today's standards. The monitor also features a built-in USB3 hub with two ports, and an SD card reader.

A cable tidy is included on the rear of the stand for keeping everything neat once it’s set up how you like. There's also a handle at the top, making it easier to lift the monitor if needed. Using BenQ's software Palette Master Element you need to use a calibration device to calibrate the monitor, such as the X-Rite i1 Display Pro. I can’t see many differences between the spec of the CS2730 and CS2731 (the USB-C would have been nice). When you combine these with the features that were already great on the original SW271, the Pros list gets pretty long: My wife and I are starting our photography business in Australia and we wanted to get an photography-grade monitor to help us proof/edit our images that will eventually be printed. I’d been looking for the new CS2731 to understand pricing but it appears it won’t be available in the UK until early 2020 and it’s currently only available in Japan. For HDR (High Dynamic Range) you can use the provided HDMI cable, and with this cable, you're able to display the full resolution of 3840x2160. The NVidia GeForce 1050 graphics card also supports HDR, and it looks like if you have the right games, then you might be able to play games in HDR. You can also enable this in Windows 10. My NEC Multisync PA241W just died (3 blinking lights and a blank screen) and NEC tells me it can no longer be repaired so I am in the market. I have a custom built PC per Nasim’s spec in another article and currently do still photos but want to move to video as well and hope to find a monitor to do both. I plan to move to either a 27″ or 32″ monitor and possibly 4K

The SW271 is supplied with modular shade which is invaluable when working in brighter situations. (Image credit: BenQ) Reducing unwanted glare from ambient lighting, the shading hood is perfect for BenQ PhotoVue Monitors. The SW271C's wide gamut support, UHD resolution, and accurate color reproduction make it a top choice for photography professionals. Earlier last year I had a chance to test the BenQ SW320 monitor, which turned out to be a solid choice for my photography needs. I was able to calibrate the display using both BenQ’s native Palette Master Element software and DisplayCAL, which provided me with great results at the end (you can see my calibration results in my detailed BenQ SW320 Review). I wanted to explore BenQ’s product line even further and this time I will be taking a closer look at the smaller 27″ version of the monitor, the SW271. Quite a few things have changed since last time I looked at BenQ monitors and with the most recent updates to calibration software, it seemed like I could get even more out of these wide gamut displays. Let’s take a look at what I was able to achieve with the BenQ SW271 in my environment. From what I can tell – NEC has the advantage for color accuracy and the BenQ for screen resolution. The monitor supports a number of calibration devices which are needed for use with the BenQ Palette Master Element software. The devices supported includeX-Rite i1 Display Pro / i1 Pro / i1 Pro 2 & Datacolor Spyder 4 and Spyder 5‎.
