Betsy Sharkey of the Los Angeles Times believed that the film "is an inside joke" and also said, "The laughs [in the film] come easily, the screams not so much." [46] David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter remarked, "It's just too bad the movie is never much more than a hollow exercise in self-reflexive cleverness that's not nearly as ingenious as it seems to think." [47]

The Doctors - Evil surgeons wearing apparent parts of faces sewn to their own. Generic reference: House on Haunted Hill (1999). [Bet on by Accounting]Kraken - Massive tentacles seen in control room assault scene. Kills the Chem tech Lin. Generic reference: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954). [Not on Betting Pool Board] so this was really good. i keep going between four and four and a half stars, but just know that i really liked it. tws for this one include discussion and representation of addiction and mental health issues. i clarify this part first, obviously, just in case someone doesn't want to read those topics, but also to clarify i deal with none of those things first hand, so i can't speak in terms of how the representation was done. i think it was done well, but again, my opinion doesn't count for this part. Affected by mood-altering drugs applied by the underground technicians, Curt and Jules go off into the woods and begin to undress. The underground technicians focus intently on the exposure of Jules' breasts, raucously at first but later soberly observing that her disrobing for the audience is an essential part of the ritual. "Gotta keep the customer satisfied."

Whedon described the film as an attempt to revitalize the horror genre. He called it a "loving hate letter" to the genre, continuing: [10] Winners of the British Fantasy Awards 2013". britishfantasysociety.co.uk. November 3, 2013. Archived from the original on December 27, 2018 . Retrieved December 26, 2018. Vampires - Bald, gothically dressed humanoids with sharp ears. Possibly referenced earlier as Gremlins. Generic reference: Nosferatu (1922). [Bet on by Distribution] For me it re-ignited the flame in what was a dying genre, being poisoned by numerous of extremely bad films. Not only did it make it's way into my favorite horrors of all time, but it makes me have faith that people can once again create a true horror. Now there are only remakes of horrors, ( Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street ....) or prequels, ( Prometheus ).

We are told very little from the synopsis and deliberately so. As the story goes along we see the narrative in past and present and see how this woman came to be here, waiting. Aldersons writing is suspenseful, intriguing and clever. The story led me on an unexpected journey and while I could anticipate some small elements, I could never have guessed where it would end up. Such an enjoyable novel.

Kiko - The Japanese floating girl ghost. Generic reference: Yurei films (e.g. The Grudge (2004) and The Ring (2002).) [Seen in Japan] Marty is in his room smoking pot and reading a picture book. He hears a mysterious whisper suggesting he go for a walk. He is disoriented and cries out, "You think I'm a puppet, huh?... I'm the boss of my own brain so give it up!" However he relents and goes for a walk. Awards 2012". Central Ohio Film Critics Association. Archived from the original on December 26, 2018 . Retrieved December 26, 2018.I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that The Cabin in the Woods is about Rose, a woman with a tough childhood who finds herself injured and hiding out at a remote cabin in the woods. This is all I knew when I started reading this book but oh boy was I in for a good story. Before I properly start the review, I want to thank Netgalley and Avon Books for letting me read this ARC. Now, let's start. To my mind, books like Walden are about carving out a life close to nature, whether for the long-term or just a short while, and limiting the influence of the outside world. It’s about a slower, more self-reliant, and more grounded existence; usually with a lot of reflection, writing, and pottering around in nature. Sharkey, Betsy (April 13, 2012). "Review: 'The Cabin in the Woods' is Joss Whedon's inside joke". Los Angeles Times. Archived from the original on January 2, 2018 . Retrieved December 26, 2018. Being a huge fan of Sarah Alderson’s work since her YA novels I always look forward to reading her work, and can safely say that once again I have not been disappointed.

Man with Plastic Bag on Head - Seen on a control room monitor suffocating an employee with a clear, plastic bag. Likely a generic serial killer parodying unique kill-tools. [Not on the Betting Pool Board] Rose grew up in less than ideal conditions. Her life conditions changed considerably and she is living the high life, or so it seems. One day she decides to disappear to a cabin in the woods in upstate and is hopeful that she cannot be found there. Why is she on the run? Did someone follow her? You've seen horrible things, an army of nightmare creatures. But they are nothing compared to what came before, what lies below." Sometimes it’s hard to tell what a book is about, and in the case of The Cabin in the Woods, that is definitely true. (And that synopsis poem doesn’t reveal much….)Angry Molesting Tree - Exactly what it sounds like. Seen bursting out of elevator, more detailed scene cut from theatrical release. Specific reference: The Evil Dead (1981). [Bet on by Wranglers] A roller coaster of scandal, drama and heart pounding suspense follow. The mystery of who is in hiding in the remote cabin and how they got there unfolds in snippets of past, present and future. Sitterson reacts with dread to the Demolition team's comment about interference from "upstairs". At that moment, the direct hotline phone rings and Hadley answers in a hushed voice. He learns that someone thought dead has actually survived and thus the ritual isn't complete. He turns to look at the monitor and asks sternly: "Which one?"
