An instant camera for the 21st century, the Mini Evo allows you to preview your shots before you take them, tweak the exposure, add filters and flash, then print and share your shots to social media. Paired with its companion app, it can even be used to print off your smartphone pictures as well.

That said, in activating the camera for the first time via the commendably tactile on/off lever on the faceplate, we’re met with an almost overwhelming array of on-screen options, which meant that it took us a couple of minutes to work out how we could cut through all that and simply capture and output a photo. It should, after all, be as simple as pointing and shooting, as on competing purely analogue models from Fuji and others. There are numerous instant cameras and printers in the Instax line-up, but its latest hybrid option is one of the most innovative we’ve seen. When you’re ready to print one of your shots, pull the delightfully retro Print lever on top of the camera - sure, the same thing could have been achieved with a simple button, but where's the fun in that?! Inside it's a very modern device, though, pairing a 5 megapixel digital camera with an inbuilt Instax Mini printer and sporting two shutter release buttons, 3-inch LCD screen, accessory shoe, selfie mirror, flash, a charging port and a micro SD slot. Size-wise, the Instax Mini Evo fits in the hand comfortably enough - for reference, I have large hands. It has a much more angular design than the smooth cruves of the LiPlay, and as mentioned above it also has a usefully textured surface.

If you want to transfer images taken on the camera, you must print them first. This may be an annoyance if you do not want to waste your film unnecessarily.

The Instax Mini Evo is a love letter to Fuji's 1970s heyday, with a retro-inspired design and abundance of easy-to-use filters and effects designed to mimic analogue film. It easily meets the criteria to make our list of best instant cameras. But is it predominantly an instant camera, or simply a digital one with a built-in Instax film printer? Lens modes: Normal, Vignette, Soft Focus, Blur, Fisheye, Colour Shift, Light Leak, Mirror, Double Exposure, Half-frameThere is another shutter button on top of the camera, but as the Instax Mini Evo does everything that it can to make you shoot in portrait mode, you'll find yourself using the front shutter release most of the time.

Some only see the ordinary. Not you. And neither does the new instax mini Evo hybrid camera. Instead, this smart analog-style shooter brings what you love to life. Every angle, in all the colours, with all the creative options. Printing time: Approx. 16 seconds (Plus 7 seconds when printed using instax-Rich Mode immediately after startup) From the app you can perform a number of useful functions, including taking remote control of the camera (useful for selfies and group shots).Use your smartphone to control the camera. Get your shot set up then release the camera shutter using your phone as a remote control. Overall, the Mini Evo has plenty to offer, and while I’ll keep my fingers crossed for an Instax Square format model in the future, the Evo has jumped straight to the top of my list of favourite instant cameras. Countering that somewhat is the huge amount of lens and filter effects on offer - 100 in total - which are both easy to apply via the lens ring and filter dial, and produce genuinely pleasing results. Just be aware that they're baked into the JPEG files that the camera records, with no option to also store an unfiltered original or to change the filters after the picture has been taken. Once an image has been printed out, you’ll need to allow some time for the Instax film to develop - in other words, don’t be alarmed when it pops out completely white. After a few minutes, the colours should have fully rendered.
