Could the extra maturation of the 12 YO benefit the 105 profile? I am not privy to the 105 recipe but I doubt the part with the bourbon casks. Not to say that there are no bourbon casks at Glenfarclas distillery but the overwhelming part is sherry casks there. A lesser-spotted independent bottling of Glenfarclas single malt! This Speysider was distilled in 2008 and matured in an ex-fino sherry cask for 14 years, before it was bottled by W.M. Cadenhead in a release of 234 bottles. A rare thing indeed.

Having tried the 15 year, I bought a 20cl first to try. Giving it time in the glass and just a wee bit of water really brings out this lovely dram. It can be tasted neat (which I rarely do with at such abv) but it's really nice and nothing like it's 15 year old brother. Everything a seasoned 105 drinker could wish for in a glass. Tasting notes absolutely spot on here. Tobacco and Coffee notes throughout. Possibly the greatest cigar malt ever made. The 60% really holds up to the astringency of the cigar smoke.A dash of this whisky can be great in baking, compote, and desserts. Its sweetness and strength work well there. Taste: Neat, less welcoming and perhaps even heavier than the restrained nose. An oily mouthfeel brings rubber - some of it burnt - along with tyres, spirit sulphur and a few raisins. Water makes a huge difference here as well, adding some silkiness to the mouthfeel and turning the taste maltier with some coal smoke and flint stone along with the burnt brown toast and plums from the neat nose.

If Glenfarclas isn’t at the top of your personal Speyside league table, I’d urge you to do as I did: reconnect with an open mind, alone or with friends, and savor some of these highly enjoyable drams. The whisky will manifest differently depending on how much water is added (from 0 water to 2:1 whisky:water ratio are all viable given the 60 proof). I have also noticed big differences nosing and tasting side by side in a tumbler and a glencairn. The time sitting with water in the glass over time also factors in.
