About this deal

Without the Pod, the Go 3 is as basic as it gets. The camera module has a single button that, by default, starts a recording. You can swap its default capture mode via the camera menu (accessible via the Action Pod's screen) or require a double press to minimize accidental recordings. A red tally lamp on the Go 3 flashes when it's rolling footage. The Insta360 Go 3 offers three storage options: 32GB, 64GB or 128GB, all built-in. Choose carefully, because with no MicroSD card slot there’s no way to expand whatever you start with. A single USB-C port handles charging and data transfers, but aside from that connectivity is wireless: there’s Bluetooth 5.0 and 5GHz Wi-Fi. Insta360 says that software optimizations and a resolution upgrade to 2.7K results in crisp, clear videos. Additionally, there are no clip length limitations and a larger 310mAh battery allows it to shoot continuously for 45 minutes — a 50% increase compared to the previous generation. The Insta360 Go 3 is an ingenious camera. It’s well made and easy to use, and the design is impressively versatile. Image quality is pretty good, too and it’s stuffed with clever shooting modes. Lowlight performance is weak, as is the case with all action cameras, so if the lights drop, your phone will likely do a better job of capturing videos.

Go 3 review: a mini modular magnetic multi-function Insta360 Go 3 review: a mini modular magnetic multi-function

For those familiar with Insta360's previous version of the Go camera, the big difference with the latest model is the introduction of the Action Pod. Part LCD monitor, part settings dashboard, part recharge station, I like that the Go 3 can record on its own without the housing, but if you're low on battery, you can slap the camera on the Action Pod for up to two hours of additional recording. And seeing as the Go 3 only sports a 320mAh battery, the Action Pod is pretty much a must-have for vlogging and any longer excursions. The Insta360 Go 3 offers FlowState electronic image stabilisation and horizon levelling, and it’s extremely effective– able to transform shaky handheld sequences into smooth scenes that almost look like they could have been shot using a gimbal. There are three levels available, but you can also just shoot in the camera’s FreeFrame video setting and subsequently add either horizon-levelled or FPV-style image stabilisation in post-processing. We had the screen at full brightness because we were working outdoors, but still this is a Y-series chip and should absolutely have longer battery life. One of the main selling points of this series of Intel processors is its power efficiency, so we simply cannot wrap our heads around why the battery life is so bad here – and it’s not a Windows 11 thing because the other Surface devices last much longer. Using the Insta360 Go 3 is a straightforward experience. The camera features a USB-C port on the side for charging, as well as a small latch that secures it within the pod. It requires a bit of force to detach the camera from the pod due to the strong magnets. Audio quality is another area where the GO 3 stands out, delivering acceptable sound even from a distance. While it may not match the audio quality of a GoPro, the camera’s stereo and directional microphones make it well-suited for vlogging or outdoor activities. An added wind reduction feature also comes in handy when using the camera for action sports. User ExperienceA magnetic design and accessories allow you to mount the GO 3 anywhere, providing you with a multitude of creative possibilities. Including but not limited to pets, helmets and fly-on-the-wall shots.

As a bonus, though, the Insta360 Go 3 provides a wide selection of shooting modes, ranging from the usual timeshift, interval and slow motion modes, through to the new Freeform, which allows you to capture video that can be cropped to horizontal or vertical video modes in post. Also worth noting is that Insta360 has added a new loop mode, which makes this camera useful for anyone who wants to use the camera as a kind of cycling dashcam. Speaking of which, the Go 3 features a 11.24mm f/2.2 camera (35mm equivalent) and is capable of shooting up to 2.7K video (at 24/25/30 frames per second) and photos in four resolutions including 2,560 x 1,440 (16:9) and 2,936 x 1,088 (2.7:1) as a DNG RAW. The camera can also shoot at 1440p and 1080p at 24/25/30/50 frames per second. Timelapses can be recorded to 1440p, but slow motion 120 frames per second video is restricted to 1080p. Insta360's FreeFrame feature is also a lot of fun, and perfect for less experienced shooters. It lets you capture photos and videos, and then reframe your shot easily within the app. While it only appears to capture 16:9 footage, the Go 3 actually shoots a more square frame, so you can losslessly switch between 16:9, 19:6, and 1:1. The GO 3 retains the thumb-shaped design of its predecessors, complete with rounded ends and curved edges, albeit in slightly different dimensions.

If none of those resolution limitations are an issue, the Go 3 serves up some fantastic stabilization, excellent features, and the ability to reframe your photo or video in the app after you've finished recording. The Insta360 Action Pod is a housing, remote control, and charger for the Go 3 camera all in one unit. The Go 3 fits into a slot on the front and connects with the Pod using Bluetooth — that means that the Action Pod can control the camera even if it’s not actively attached. The touchscreen is both responsive and reasonably intuitive to use; the camera itself is water resistant to a depth of 5m, while the Action Pod case is IPX4 water resistant; and it’s not heavy or bulky, either, with the Go 3 weighing a mere 35.5g and the Action Pod a further 96.3g. Despite its compact size, the Insta360 Go3 offers decent image quality for a camera this size. It can record videos up to 1440p at 50fps (up to 100Mbps bit rate) or 2.7K at 30fps (up to 50Mbps bitrate). The f/2.2 aperture ensures you capture bright and detailed imagery. However, its low-light performance does leave something to be desired. Footage taken in the dark is noisier than other more expensive and bulkier counterparts such as the GoPro, but the camera still manages to deliver decent results prior to sunset lighting condition.
