About this deal

Disappointing whisky, limited nose and a dry harsh flavour. The least impressive Japanese whisky I have tried. Hatozaki Small Batch Pure Malt is a vatting of 100% malt whiskies aged in bourbon casks, sherry casks and Japanese Mizunara casks. It is around 5 years old and produced in small batches (less than 20 casks). While the company is not exactly transparent about it, several retailers confirm our premonition: it contains some Japanese spirit but part of the whisky is imported from Scotland. After all the distillery only started in 2018. According to new regulations, such products cannot use the name Japanese whisky after April 1st 2024. Palate: Grain sweetness, a touch of honey and barrel char, with more stone fruit and orange blossom.

The blend is aged in a mixture of ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and traditional Japanese mizunara casks from the Hokkaido and Tohuku forests. They also have Hatozaki Finest Blended, a blend of whiskies up to 12 years. The last is Hatozaki Umeshu Cask Finish, over 12 years and finished in bespoke barrels that previously held Umeshu liqueur. This single malt whisky is from Japan’s oldest distillery, Yamazaki of Suntory. It has been aged in Bordeaux wine barrels, which give it distinct red fruit notes, in addition to ex-Sherry casks and the native Mizunara oak. A refreshing nose of strawberry, dried cranberry, toffee, cereal and a hint of incense, which comes from the Mizunara oak. Sweet and creamy on the palate, with spiced notes of vanilla oak, butter brioche and lime zest bitterness. Alc 43% Facing the Akashi Kaikyo bridge from which it takes its name, the small Kaikyo distillery, which started operating in 2018, offers you a taste of its future productions with Hatozaki Pure Malt whisky.

Hatozaki Pure Malt Whisky | Master of Malt

While waiting for the first single malt distilled at the Kaikyō distillery to be sufficiently mature, Kimio Yonezawa uses his skills as a master blender on Hatozaki blend whiskies. Inspired by his travels abroad and his regular exchanges with foreign master distillers and blenders, especially Scottish, Kimio Yonezawa carefully craft Hatozaki whiskies using a two-step blending process. Palate: Rich and complex with a good helping of malt, aromatic spices, dried fruit and toasted cereal notes, with a slightly creamy vanilla undertone. The Hibiki brand was first launched in 1989 to commemorate Suntory’s 90th anniversary. The ‘Japanese Harmony’ version of Hibiki is a blend of malt whiskies from the Yamazaki and Hakushu distilleries and aged in a blend of casks including American white oak, Sherry barrels and the native Mizunara oak. A perfumed nose of potpourri, candied citrus fruits, sweet vanilla and raisins, sweet and smooth, with honey, butterscotch, cigar box bitterness and white pepper on the palate, complex and long. Whisky reviews for Hatozaki Pure Malt

With a long experience as brewers started in 1856, particularly with Akashi-Tai sakes, the Yonezawa family has been distilling spirits since 1917. 100 years later, in 2017, the production of spirits gains new momentum with the installation of Forsyths stills and the creation of the Kaikyō distillery to produce Japanese whisky and gin. This two-fold process allows for the complexity and balance so prized in Japanese blended whiskies. The Japanese whisky scene was created by the twin dynasties of Suntory and Nikka, inspired by Masataka Taketsuru’s fact-finding trip to Scottish distilleries over a century ago.

The Akashi Sake Brewery is owned by the Yonezawa family. It is located in the city of Akashi – not to be mistaken with Akashi whisky from Eigashima. They make artisan sake since 1856. In the adjacent Kaikyо̄ distillery they produce gin and Hatozaki whisky. The name comes from the oldest stone lighthouse in Japan, a symbol of guidance.

Made from a combination of Scottish malt and Canadian grain in the Chugoku distillery in the town of Togouchi, this blended whisky is aged in an abandoned railway tunnel. It features a slightly peated nose of salted caramel, coconut, citrus peel and sweet spices, light-weighted and saline on the palate, smooth and creamy, filled with ripe orchard fruits. Alc 40%

Nose: quite light but very grainy and mashy, with a bit of funk that immediately reminded me of young Ben Nevis spirit, their Coire Leis perhaps. Some green apples and unripe pear, hints of sourdough. Then floral notes and grass. Limited complexity. Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. We shall first try to settle any dispute over a dram of whisky. Disputes that cannot be settled over multiple drams of whisky shall be solely submitted to the court of Amsterdam, The Netherlands unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise. Not so bad. Delicate, floral, toffee and berries to taste. Some sharpness can be found. When you add a splash of water, the whiskey opens up like a flower.

No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. This delivers a wonderfully unique blend that represents the refinement and expert craftsmanship of Master Blender Kimio Yonezawa.
