About this deal

Macro setups can be stored and named, too, so that you can apply your favourite buttons’ macro setups to any of your custom patches. Much like ‘control routes’ on the Alesis Andromeda –which give you a way to ‘interrupt’ the mod paths – Macros can also control mod-matrix mod routes too, If you are pondering applications for such glacial shifts, another parameter might offer clues: Freerun. Touch any key briefly, and a free-running envelope will progress through all its timed stages without further intervention. In a live situation, you can initiate complete ambient soundscapes while you nip off for a glass of sweet sherry. Each LFO has delay, fade in, 3 triggering modes, smoothing, start phase, BPM sync, and a One-Shot mode so that they can act as envelopes. Polyphonic aftertouch, or poly pressure, allows the player to modulate notes individually from within a range already held down. This requires sensors for every key and is therefore more complex to produce than channel or mono aftertouch. Typically based on a strip beneath the keyboard delivering a single value to the whole synth, channel aftertouch is ideal for monophonic instruments but less effective when applied to a whole chord. This is where the CS‑80 — and just a handful of other synths — score so highly. The next section is where you will find the CV ins/outs and arpeggiator, and an area called ‘main system’. This is where you change patches and banks, save, choose favourite patches, initialise, and – with a feature I also love on Korg's Wavestate – create patches out of thin air with the random button.

All three oscillators can access any of the 219 available waveforms; these include the expected analogue modelled waves, plus families of more exotic fare, with names such as Cluster, Flux, Vokz, Klangor and Scorpio. The tonal qualities of each are rich, varied and best experienced by trying them out while watching the oscilloscope. I did initially wonder whether a couple of hundred waves would be enough, but since the Hydrasynth offers myriad ways to twist, squash, mash and trash them, it should be ages before you try every combination. But it doesn’t end there; two filters offer 12 modes in total, from LPG to 12dB octave-morphing. Then there’s the LFOs, 5 envelope generators, ring modulator, noise generator, mixer and effects (including modulation, ambience and more) so you can send your signal on whatever wild path you choose. Tactile User Interface Giving you more tools to manipulate your sound, the Hydrasynth's three oscillators are fed through a mixer, a Noise Generator and a Ring Modulator. This smooth, alternative workflow is guaranteed to inspire with its highly customisable sound engine features. The pads also indicate scales, patterns and more with colour-coding, making it as intuitive as it is enjoyable to play. The four smaller screens line up with the rotaries, with the top third of each screen displaying assignments for the top row of knobs. The assignments for the lower set of knobs are displayed on the bottom third. Filter 1 has 12 modes inc. LPG and Formant, filter 2 is classic state-variable 12dB/octave morphing filter The Hydrasynth LFOs feature a STEP mode that lets you create patterns with up to 64 steps. Having 5 mini step sequencers gives you an amazing number of possibilities for further shaping your sound.

The Master Control section is where all parameter editing, patch naming, and Macro performing is done. It sounds simple, and it is. We always make sure of that. Getting around isn't as easy as it might be because there's no method of going directly to a particular location. Initially, you change patches by spinning the encoder or pressing the L/R arrows, holding Shift to jump in 10s. To speed things along you can define 32 'Favorite' patches which serve as more efficient entry points. Additionally, you can browse by name and category, but there are no User categories. KEY FEATURES: 4-octave keyboard with poly aftertouch. 8 voices/3 oscillators per-voice. Ribbon controller. Analogue modelling, WaveScan synthesis, Mutants. 5 x 128 patches. 12 filter types. 32 route mod matrix. 8 assignable macros per-patch. 2 CV ins and 5 CV outputs. Comprehensive arpeggiator.Allowing you to get the envelopes perfectly in sync with your music, you can adjust the stages in seconds or time divisions. Five LFOs and five DAHDSR envelopes are on board the Hydrasynth, further powering your sound shape shifting adventure. MusicRadar verdict: This is a very impressive debut release. The Hydrasynth looks and sounds great, dares you to explore it further – plus, it is impeccably built and fairly priced. There is a lot to like here. The web says Furthermore, oscillators 1 and 2 are routed into Mutators which allow you to seriously shape your sound. Come up with something completely new or recreate classic synth sounds. Among the many features that have been added to the Hydrasynth over the course of its firmware updates, one that really expands its capabilities as a generative sound source is the ability to define multiple trigger sources for each of the envelope generators. By default, every envelope will be triggered by playing notes, but it's also possible to allow them to be activated by LFOs, ribbon gestures on the keyboard and Deluxe models, pressing a sustain pedal, and the modulation inputs. Hydrasynth is a great end user product and built better than anything else I own in the high-end synth offerings. It is disappointing how other well established synth manufactures have compromised the integrity of their product using light weight plastic construction materials that wont hold up as good as the Hydrasynth in constant transport. Patch memory has increased in v2.0! The Hydrasynth now holds 8 banks of 128 patches, for a total of 1,024. We hired some of the best sound designers in the world to create the factory patches. Set how the beautiful long ribbon controller affects sounds with the ribbon button. Hold the chord button until it flashes, then press up to eight notes and trigger them from one key – much like some classic polysynths. The ribbon is a very nifty thing indeed and can act as an instrument in its own right. Play it like a theremin. Alternatively, assign it modulation duties or use it to bend held notes/chords.The delays and reverbs were modeled after some of the most popular effects on the market. They're smooth, silky, and perfectly synced.

With 32 user-definable Modulation matrix slots, there are plenty of ways to use the 35 modulation sources and 191 modulation destinations. Furthermore, all of the Hydrasynth's LFOs feature delay, fade in, 3 triggering modes, smoothing, start phase and one shot modes allowing them to act as envelopes and BPM sync.

While it's great to have a powerful synthesizer that you can keep out of the way, sometimes you want to actually perform with it.
