Smart scales calculate your estimated body fat percentage using bioelectrical impedance. Sensors underneath the feet send an undetectable electric current from one foot through the body to the other foot. It will also provide a wealth of heart health information, giving an ECG reading, showing pulse wave velocity (PWV) and estimating the user’s vascular age. It’s become common knowledge that being healthier is about much more than simply losing weight. You may have heard of terms such as ‘body composition’, ‘body mass index’ and ‘body fat percent', but what do they actually mean?

Performance had a maximum of 45 points: readability (10 points), accuracy (10 points), consistency (10 points), technology (10 points) and ease of setup (5 points). This is a premium scale, and has a price tag to match, but if you're interested in making long-term changes and improving your fitness rather than just losing weight, it could be well worth the investment.Readability is the only attribute this scale didn’t receive a perfect score on. We found the display very easy to read, and changing between units was simple. We tested 20 smart scales, but only 14 reach all of the criteria to make it in our final list of recommendations. While these three didn't quite make the cut, we did find some notable features: App compatibility: Do you need to use the scale’s official app, or can you pair with and sync up easily with Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, Google Health, Fitbit, etc.? It’s important to remember that these measurements are only an estimate. You should consult a professional for the most accurate readings.

Another excellent option are modern electronic scales which include the ability to measure weight, body mass index (BMI) or even directly the amount of body fat you have on board. The best smart scales enable this information to be collated electronically and then uploaded automatically to your smartphone or the cloud for logging, tabulating and plotting out in an easy to read graph.
