Why or why not? I waited for over a year to read Into the Forest. In that frame of time, I had imagined this idea in my head of a book filled with controversy and chaos. The reality of what this book was never crossed paths with what I had imagined. It was far better. There are no strings of lights, no Christmas cards. There are no piles of presents, no long-distance phone calls from great-aunts and second cousins, no Christmas carols. There is no turkey, no plum pudding, no stroll to the bridge with our parents, no Messiah. This year Christmas is nothing but another white square on a calendar that is almost out of dates, an extra cup of tea, a few moments of candlelight, and, for each of us, a single gift.This reading activity helps your class develop their skills in asking a range of retrieval questions by reading answers. Most of the people in my book club enjoyed this and it really does come down to personal tastes. Some books are just poorly written but this really is not. For me, the element of gloom felt throughout the book, was simply not for me and the pacing was not to my liking either. At the end of the day, I have read so many books in this genre that I am a bit tired out on it as we ll. There are some rather strange happenings and a rather dreary feeling throughout. This was an odd read I must say but I could not get into the book no matter how I tried. And I did try. L’écriture est belle et je reconnais que le livre se dévore. C’est toujours important de créer de nouveaux récits, et de placer les personnages féminins au centre des fictions dystopiques (Marlen Haushofer l’avait brillamment expérimenté avec Le mur invisible dans les années 60).

This is by far one of the best WWII books I have come upon. I came to feel as if I knew Morris and Miriam as my friends. This is my first Rebecca Frankel novel; I will be looking for more. History lovers and those who enjoy inspiring stories will not want to miss this book.The story focuses on two teenage girls who live about 30 miles from the nearest town in the northern redwood forest of CA. The deaths of their parents leave them completely dependent on each other. At first they sit cozily by the fire, carefully rationing their food, taking an inventory of everything in the house, and waiting for things to return to normal. Even as they begin to grow and preserve their own food, and then develop more aggressive survival skills, they watch their resources dwindle. How incredible to make a decision about when to use the last aspirin or how to use the last can of gas. Or to savor a single Hershey's Kiss, knowing that it may be the last chocolate you will ever taste in your life. It's hard to read this book without feeling like an unappreciative squanderer.
