About this deal

Dom: Even though excessive roominess is slightly moderated, LP6 retains Altra’s ‘classic’ last, which may be too spacio or us for many runners.

We can’t talk about footwear for the trail without talking about traction. On the Lone Peak 6.0, you’ll find Altra’s Grippy Max Trac outsole. Traction is about more than just being grippy. There needs to be a balance of grip, tread, and durability. And that’s exactly what Altra has done with this outsole. Anyone can join and everyone belongs. Benefits include great gear offers, special pricing on events and an annual Co-op Member Reward—for life. Join once, enjoy forever. Honestly, it’s par for the course when you’re rough on gear. Altra Lone Peak 6.0 Conclusion (Photo/Josh Kirchner)TAYLOR: The Lone Peak series has a great following, and for a good reason. A very natural running feel is what you’ll get from top to bottom. There is a lot of room for natural foot splay and placement, minimal cushion, and solid grip for various terrain. In some ways, it simply feels like an extension of your foot. Dom: That said, the usual caveats remain: this is a wide shoe that prioritizes toe comfort over foot hold. The ‘classic’ Altra last is not to everyone’s taste. Similarly it is also a zero drop shoe, which can be a jarring transition if your foot is not used to it. Topo Athletic is probably the closest. They have wider toe boxes and a little more drop. I really like the MTN Racer 2. They’re also releasing the new Ultraventure 3 soon. Reply

Those vents round the toe box of the LP 6 look like they will get snagged and ripped by vegetation and thorny shrubs and the protection will just peel away. Canice: I have run in every version of the Lone Peak since the LP 1.5 and the shoe really has come a long way over time. I found the midfoot hold of the LP 6 to be much better than previous versions and the upper itself is much more advanced in construction techniques. Dom: Interestingly, I don’t fully agree with Canice here. Midsole springiness is not generally something I look for in a trail shoe, and although I’ve enjoyed it in specific cases (Skechers Razor TRL, for example), springiness is primarily a “road shoe” trait that has more relevance to lighter shoes targeted at smooth terrain, and less at the ‘heavy duty’ end of the market. In any case, I personally have no beef with the Ego midsole used in the Lone Peak 6. Matt: "First things first, runners should know that this shoe offers Altra's original, wide-shaped toe box. I usually wear an 11, but a 10.5 in this shoe was more than comfortable for me. The upper offered a comfortable wrap around my foot while still providing enough room for my toes to move and adjust while on the trail." For reference, here are the stated weights of some notable shoes in the Lone Peak 6’s category (all stated weights based on a US Men’s size 9):Hi Drew – I tried on a pair of the Lone Peak 6 shoes, and I loved the toe room, but don’t think the zero drop is for me though. Do Altra (or anyone else) make a shoe with the roomy toebox but without the zero drop? Reply Running is more comfortable with the right clothing. The Good From a fit perspective, the Lone Peak 6 is an incredibly versatile shoe. It will work well for people with wide feet who need a bit more real estate in the toebox and for folks with average foot types who prefer fits that allow their toes to splay. The workability of the upper will also give some runners with average-to-narrow width feet like myself the option to cinch down the shoe quite securely as well (though if you know you love a very consistently narrow fit, including through the toebox, you should at the very least try it on before buying). Just a few short hikes in the Lone Peak’s so far, but I am really liking them, and have relegated by almost-new Peregrine’s to the donation pile. It took a few days to feel secure in the LP6’s, with all that room midfoot and around my toes, but now I trust them. Brilliant in the wet, too. They dry super-fast. Thanks for the excellent review! ReplyOnce I start running, I stop noticing the shoe, which I think is a testament to the natural feel that the Lone Peak provides,” another reviewer says. “It’s like the shoe becomes an extension of my body.” But don’t let the shoe’s plush cushioning fool you. The Altra Lone Peak 6 can be just as aggressive as it is comfortable. The shoe fits true to size with a tight heel cup. Altra’s unique selling point has always been the unique footprint of their shoe that follows the foot shape more naturally (alongside their zero drop). Good points, Chris. I can imagine a narrower foot sliding around like crazy in an Altra shoe. I have a narrow heel and wide forefoot, so find the fit to work well.

ALEX: You can’t review an Altra without first expressing appreciation for that wonderfully roomy, foot-shaped toe box. I hope my fellow Lone Peak reviewers don’t mess this up. Taylor, don’t mess this up by talking about the upper first (Editor’s note: He didn’t mess it up). There’s also a great gusseted tongue which helps keep out debris and make the inner feel snug. I’m always a fan of this. Altra designated half editions to mark the minor version updates in the past. It has since moved away from that strategy, but I would call the Lone Peak 6 as close to a half update as you can get. The Lone Peak 6 retains just about everything that draws runners in the first place — the zero drop ride, roomy toe box, and EGO midsole, and even the MaxTrac outsole with its chevron lugs. We’ll get into the details below, but I think “Flat Bois” all over can take a collective breath and relax. The Altra Lone Peak series is something of a classic among the zero-drop trail running community. The Lone Peak 6 has that classic wide foot shape with a sturdy upper, excellent lacing, and a promising grip.
