About this deal

From my experience with the Merkur Futur, I feel that it’s highly aggressive even at its mildest setting. It does give you a great shave but I wouldn’t consider it a wet shaving beginner friendly. So far, I haven’t shaved beyond the 3rd setting as I feel that it gives a very close shave already. Men with moderate to coarse beards will find this razor a handy tool that can replace several safety razors. This safety razor comes with a mechanism to adjust the aggressiveness. The beginners are usually not comfortable with the aggression of a razor. This space age design from the 1980s is smooth and rounded, which can make it slippery when wet. The blades are adjusted by twisting the handle for 6 settings. One more than theMerkur Progress. So at the highest setting, it is more aggressive. Merkur was founded in Germany in 1896 by Emil Hermes. The name Merkur comes from Mercury, which is the Roman name translation of the Greek god Hermes.

The Van Der Hagen safety razor and Microtouch One are both popular razors we suspect have been white labelled in this way. I noticed the design is not as intuitive as it probably should be. There is a slight risk you might cut yourself if you don’t load the blade on carefully. Make sure you’re holding the sides of the top panel while setting it down over the blade base. John Miller is a passionate wet shaving enthusiast, a pastime he has been devoted to for the past 7 years. A veteran of the trade, he has earned the reputation of being an meticulous advocate of traditional wet shaving. When John first got into the hobby, he read and researched the techniques extensively, often trying new blades and techniques, and now has an unparalleled knowledge of the best products, techniques, and tools available.Even though the gap between the razor blade and the head is adjustable, this doesn’t mean that it’s actually a forgiving safety razor. Unlike other Merkur razors that use a screw to hold the blade in place, the Futur uses a clip. This unique design makes it easy to load the blade, but it can be dangerous if you are not careful.

The Futur is an adjustable razor for experienced wet shavers. If you're comfortable with your technique, you've tried shaving with a couple of different safety razors and blades, then you'll have the skills it takes to make the Merkur Futur work its magic. However, on a practical level, the aggressiveness and blade gap is the main decider. If you like mild razors, then you have to go for the Merkur Progress…….the Futur doesn’t do mild.Of course there’s more to the best adjustable safety razor than Merkur. Parker introduced the Parker Variant in 2016 as an excellent solution to many of the problems presented by the Merkur Futur and progress. Because the head is mechanically spring loaded there is the possibility of it faulting over time, although I have never seen reports of this. Vikings Blade encounters a lot of criticism for manufacturing its razors in Asia. They insist that not long after they enlisted the help of Chinese razor manufacturer Bailie with manufacturing their Chieftain butterfly razor the factory started producing almost identical designs that white-labellers slapped their logos on and sold as a direct rival to the Chieftain. Vikings Blade insist that their own manufacturing is closely monitored to high standards and their handling of this negative PR is testament to their concern and quality control. Then there’s the issue of price. The Merkur Futur is little overpriced by most standards. It’s more expensive than other razors in the range and a lot of people complained about how it cost them double the price of the Merkur 34C.

The Merkur Futur’s most distinguished feature is its adjustable blade gap, which allows users to easily control the aggressiveness of their shave. The Emperor also features a rare feature of bending the safety razor blade to achieve a sharper cutting angle. As you embark on your grooming journey with Merkur, you become part of a tradition that honours the art of shaving and elevates it to a luxurious experience. Embrace innovation and discover the epitome of grooming excellence with Merkur – your trusted companion for a lifetime of luxurious grooming experiences.Adjusting the aggressiveness is not difficult. There is a dial on the handle at the top. Hold the head gently and turn the handle. Merkur Futur Review Summary The Futur is slightly bigger than the Progress, though. I have seen users reporting that the bulkiness of the Futur affects shaving under the nose; however, using a technique of pushing the nose to the left and right sorts this out easily. Insert a sharp blade into the razor, and then simply twist the handle to 1 of its 5 predetermined settings. You can change the angle of the blade inside the razor head for exactly the shave you want. Other expert shavers like GeoFatBoy recommend drying your fingers first before adjusting and only holding the sides of the head. Bulky shaving head You can't shave with the Merkur Futur and be afraid of a little style. There's no other razor out there like it, a sleek, minimal, mid-century modern submarine that comes in three different finishes—brushed chrome satin, polished chrome finish, or gold plated chrome. Its style sets it apart as the best men's safety razor.

It sounds like a cool thing to have a razor that you can adjust, right? Well, it is and isn’t, which we’ll go into shortly! Nevertheless with more engineering and moving parts like this it is important to find the best adjustable safety razor that is going to stand the test of time when faced with water and shaving soap. I find the new version to be very mild in low settings, in fact you can’t cut anything in settings 0.5-1 even if you press hard. I find it OK in settings 3-4, so I am always surprised when some people say that it is aggressive (I like mild razors), but that may refer to the first revision. You can clearly see what the safety razor was made for and where it falls short. It’s a little heavier than most mainstream razors and the grip is less than ideal. That’s an issue when you’re trying to hold the razor in all sorts of angles to get the perfect shave.

There are two models of adjustable Merkur razors, the second one being the 500 Merkur Progre ss Adju stable, which is about one ounce lighter and an inch shorter than the Merkur Futur. If you've got small hands but still want in on Merkur quality, this is a great bet. Note the Merkur Progress 500 also comes in a slightly longer and heavier version, still sprier than the Futur, but with more heft than the standard 500 model. While the blade adjustments are made when turning the white knob on the bottom of the Progress handle and for removing the head, the Futur is adjusted easily under the head at the top of its handle. The Merkur Futur razor is well-loved as the best shaving razor for men because when it gives a close shave, almost as close as a straight razor at the most aggressive levels—a total upgrade from plastic razors. For the price you get a better design and an adjustable top, but if those are things you’re not interested in you may want to look elsewhere.
