The book is called Mrs England but in reality, this is the story about 2 women. We follow their present whilst their disturbing stories becomes apparent as both women grow from under their subversive and controlling past (and present). West Yorkshire, 1904. When newly graduated nurse Ruby May takes a position looking after the children of Charles and Lilian England, a wealthy couple from a powerful dynasty of mill owners, she hopes it will be the fresh start she needs. But as she adapts to life at the isolated Hardcastle House, it becomes clear there’s something not quite right about the beautiful, mysterious Mrs England. Ruby May was worried about taking care of four children, but the children should not have been her main concern.

Ruby May is unable to immigrate to the United States with her employers, so and in dire need of funds, she accepts a Nanny position, working for Charles and Lilian England. Charles is a wealthy mill owner, but only employs a small staff. But that is not the only odd thing Ruby notices about her new situation. Mrs England is the third novel by Stacey Halls. I’ve read both her previous works, The Familiars and The Foundling, and really enjoyed them both. I really like Stacey Halls’s style of writing so I was really excited to read Mrs England. I kept waiting for something fresh, a twist I hadn't seen before, but it never came. All opinions are my own. Halls’ storytelling is the slow-burning and refined kind – allowing readers to experience the growing menace and fear as Ruby does. Set in Edwardian times, the story explores the imbalance of power between women and men, particularly when they’re of different social classes, and what that allows people to get away with. Ruby might be the narrator but the Englands’ marriage – and the fraught relationship between Charles and Lilian – is just as central to the story. It shapes everything that happens in the house – affecting not just Ruby’s mental state but the children she cares for too. Ruby’s own personal trauma makes her fiercely protective of the England children but it also – understandably – clouds her judgement, which begs the question: how much of the strangeness she feels in Hardcastle House is a genuine, tangible concern, and how much of her own trauma is she projecting onto the family? Like her previous novels, you can tell an immense amount of research has gone into this story. I loved the slow-building feeling of menace in the story, it’s so atmospheric and there were some moments that definitely gave me a feeling of dread. One of the most compelling things for me was the complex characters – so many of them are way more than they seem on the surface. Mr and Mrs England were brilliant characters and Halls has a brilliant way of making you question who they truly are. Ruby is a really interesting protagonist and I loved learning about her family and her past alongside her time with the Englands.
