About this deal

The TOUGH TG4 lens features optical stabilisation which can be turned on or off from the camera menu. To test it I zoomed the lens in to its maximum 100mm equivalent and took a series of shots at progressively slower shutter speeds with the stabilisation turned off and then with it enabled. As you can see from the 100 percent crops above, it’s possible to hand hold the TG4 and get sharp shots down to 1/10th, a little over three stops slower than you’d expect without stabilisation. The TG-4 has a removable front ring, once removed you can attach accessories including a fisheye adapter, teleconverter, and LED light ring flash. You can also get an underwater case to extend the waterproof depth to 45 metres, and with this there are further accessories available including electronic flash units, underwater wide conversion lens, and an underwater macro conversion lens. The TG-6 is a bit of an outlier in that Olympus continues to use a 12 Megapixel sensor, rather than the 16 or 20 Megapixel sensors found on its competitors. On a chip this small, the TG-6’s lower pixel count might help its performance at higher ISOs, but the much bigger benefit is its lens’ ability to go to F2.0 at its widest-angle setting, letting in twice as much light as its closest rivals will. And, for most purposes, a 12 Megapixel sensor is more than enough. The remote capture portion of Olympus Image share offers a good selection of adjustable settings and focusing with just a tap. ISO 3200 delivers a 4 x 6 inch print that may work for certain less critical applications, but overall the print is a bit too "scorched" looking and the colors a bit too muted to attain our good seal.

While the TG-6's rugged specs are very impressive, when it comes to going underwater, several of its peers can go quite a bit deeper, with the Nikon Coolpix W300 (arguably the TG-6's closest competitor) able to function down to 30 meters (100 feet). If you're a snorkeler, that's no big deal, but for scuba it's a very desirable trait. because sometimes, some photographers want an even larger DoF, in macro photography its very useful. grafguy: it's not about the seals, it's about air being present already, and if you put it into a very cold environment, that air might give you condensation. it might also depend on whether they were assembled in winter or in humid season. Please, Olympus, fix up your in-camera JPEG rendering software. Or at least provide an option for the owner to turn down the noise reduction. Only problem is that in raw you only have a single frame each time. This is not mentioned in the advertising description.New to the latest version of the app is the ability to configure a basic interval timer or trigger a short movie recording of up to 16 seconds. The interval timer is more like an advanced self-timer, taking no more than ten shots at intervals no greater than 3 seconds, but it’s still a handy update, and you can also configure it to capture bursts (for burst shooting the maximum interval is 30 seconds) or movies instead if preferred. If you choose to record movies remotely with the camera, sadly, you can’t touch the screen to reposition the AF area or pull-focus. All of the sample images in this review were taken using the 16 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 6Mb. You'll use a very nice 3" LCD to compose your photos. This display has 460k dots and has very good visibilityin both bright sunlight and dark rooms.

Before we move on to look at the quality results, there’s one final feature of the Olympus TOUGH TG4 that you won’t find on the other rugged water-proof compacts I’ve tested and that’s the ability to shoot camera RAW files. Choose 16M +RAW from the quality settings menu and you’ll get a RAW file in the Olympus .ORF format as well as a full resolution JPEG. I have TG2 which is 12MP while TG3/4 is 16MP. This is the reason I did not upgrade to TG4 - too many MP. Indoors, under normal incandescent lighting, color balance was warm and orange with the Auto white balance setting, and results with the Incandescent setting were too cool, with a greenish cast. The Manual setting was the most accurate and fairly neutral. The Olympus TG-4 required +0.3 EV exposure compensation, about average for this scene. (Our test lighting for this shot is a mixture of 60 and 100 watt household incandescent bulbs, a pretty yellow light source, but a very common one in typical home settings here in the U.S.) I have TG2 and the one before that (which is not TG), they all have fogging up problem while from high to (very) low temperature. Which smartphones have an optical zoom in 2020? There are a few, not one of which is an iPhone as of early April 2020.

If you want to know exactly where you are when taking a photothen the TG-4 can tell you. The camera records your location and direction, air pressure, and altitude or depth. You can also use the camera as sort of a navigation device. By pressing the Info button a few times, you'll see a compass along with current GPS data. The TG-4 can keep a log of where you've been, which you can later import into Google Earth or other software. The Olympus Tough TG-4 is a weatherised digital compact camera announced by Olympus Corporation on April 13, 2015. It differs from its predecessor, the Olympus Tough TG-3, by including raw image recording. The Olympus Tough TG-6 is the company's sixth-generation premium underwater camera. It features a 12 Megapixel sensor, 4X optical zoom lens, numerous sensors and, of course, serious protection against the elements. Key specifications Which "modern" smartphones have an optical zoom? Answer: only a few; they have slow lenses, and are not especially popular smartphone models-lines as of early 2020. Now if you're fine with using cameras with fixed focal length lenses like your iPhone, the SeaLife DC-2000 has much better IQ* than this Olympus or your iPhone. However it has a slow raw buffer, but it does have an excellent jpeg engine.

I get that we all love a new model number, but the simple fact is that this is essentially the same camera as the TG-5. Kawika Nui, you can still crop your photos on your computer or even on a smartphone after importing, so what's the deal about the "sensor crop" you would like to have? For ther image quality, there is hardly a difference between cropping in the camera and doing so by hand on Mac/PC/mobile device. The advantage of cropping in "post pro", though, is that you can crop RAW, which, by design, won't work in the camera. It is recommended to stabilize the camera using a tripod to prevent camera shake and to shoot with remote control using the wireless remote mode via OI.Share. One of the deciders for the TG-6 is, as per DPReview's review, the TG-6 is the only rugged point&shoot that can produce RAW files. That doesn't matter to my wife directly, right until "I want this printed, to send to my sister". The previous camera, a Nikon Coolpix AW130's JPEG's were ...um... not very good coming from an Epson XP-15000, and using glossy photo paper. The TG-6 is only somewhat better. Coverage. Flash coverage was quite uneven at wide angle, leaving very dark corners and edges in our flash coverage test image, and you can also see some unevenness in illumination vertically as well. Narrow coverage at wide angle isn't unusual, though, and some of the corner darkening is likely from the lens itself. We no longer test flash coverage at telephoto, as it is invariably better, making wide angle the worst case scenario.Where the TG-5 only had one underwater white balance mode, the TG-6 has three, for shallow, mid-depth and deep water. Two additional underwater shooting modes were added: macro and microscope. What stands out?

iPhoneXSmax has two cameras with fixed lens at 26, 52mm equivalent, Oly's zoom power is 100mm equivalent. But you could use a 2x add on lens to reach that with your iPhone and keep much better IQ than the Oly. Once connected the app offers four main options: Remote Control, Import Photos, Edit Photo and Add Geotag. Tapping Remote Control lets you see a live image from the camera and refocus it by tapping on your phone or tablet’s screen. Impressively you can remotely change the exposure mode between iAUTO, Aperture priority, Super Macro, and Scene mode without touching the camera’s mode dial. Depending on the selected mode, you can then tap to adjust the aperture, exposure compensation, ISO and white balance, along with changing the drive mode, and of course triggering the exposure. The drive mode menu also has an option for movie recording which uses the movie mode currently set on the camera. The IQ of the Jpegs are great but the RAW files are so good . I cant understand all the negative comments . Compared to my work camera Nikon D750 I am happy to buy the TG-4 again if I loose it . With the flash turned off, the Olympus TG-4 doesn't show any obvious signs of vignetting at wide-angle or full zoom. However, it does occur when the flash is on. Certainly at wide-angle, at least. It's less so at full zoom, but on a plain white wall, it's still noticeable. The ramblings are not nonsensical. What it means is that there are many people out there looking for a very well built rugged/waterproof camera with a decent sized sensor and good optics capable of great IQ. The IQ is gloomy. It hardly qualifies as what it name says...camera. 15m depth rating is not enough, its showerproof. The android app is horrible. No bluetooth? Gorry looking design. The sensor is old. The camera is past its design life.
