About this deal

These 100% crops directly from a 36MP D800 sensor show that this lens is a tad soft wide open in the center and DX-corner. But from f4.0 on it performs on a very good level in the DX image-circle. The FX-corner shows quite some resolution even at f2.8 but is hampered by residual spherical aberration and astigmatism until you stop down to f8 where the lens performs on a very good level across the complete image-circle .

Defocused areas within images look beautifully smooth and creamy. And the quality of bokeh holds up well when stopping down a little, helped by an extremely well-rounded aperture based on 11 diaphragm blades. While that lens was not especially old, somewhat surprising is that it took Sigma so long to introduce this utra-popular lens model under the Global Vision series badge ("Sports", in this case). This is the specific aperture required to enable the higher precision AF capabilities (most often the center AF point) in some cameras, further aiding in ideal image quality. In the words of Charlton Heston, "from my cold dead hands". I shoot auto racing with the 1.4X converter and it has never misfocused a shot. The zoom was stiff as hell out of the box but it is now very smooth. This lens is so good it's better than my 6mpixel camera. Sharpness and contrast equal to my Nikon 300 f4. Even the tripod mount is a work of art. Best investment I ever made!! About 3/4 of the 200mm results were sharp at 1/30 second and about 2/3 of the 1/20 second test images were sharp. Image stabilization has now been available in camera lenses for a long time, but I still love this feature and I often count on it making a clear improvement in my images. The most striking characteristic of this lens compared to the great number of 70-200 zooms is its price: at least 30 % less than most comparable offerings (70-200 with constant aperture 2.8). Despite its reasonable price, this lens is very good.

Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports review

The optical stabilization system is able to capture consistently blur-free handheld images at 1/30-second and the 200mm focal length. At 1/15-second it is able to remove shake from many shots, but occasionally our tests showed a result with visible motion blur. At 1/8-second I wasn't able to get a crisp handheld shot at 200mm. The pictures below illustrate the focal length range from wide to telephoto, on 35mm full-frame and APS-C camera bodies: The camera's autofocus system delivers a strong performance throughout its focusing range. Whereas some lenses are characterised by manic movements followed by a final shift for accuracy, the lens on test moves smoothly but surely between different focusing points, without the hesitation we sometimes get just prior to confirming focus. There is a little noise as this happens, although this isn't too distracting. Certainly if you turned off any beeps from the camera, you could realistically use this lens in more discreet environments without too much bother.Distance information is relayed to the camera, so the Nikon body can do all the advanced exposure-related stuff with this lens. But this is true for all alternatives too. [+] Place a bright light source such as the sun in the corner of a complex, high-count lens element/group design and some effects of flare are going to be seen. I would still prefer the 70-200 4L because of better IQ and built quality (and the fact that it's not a third-party).. Plus its cheaper.. At f/2.8, mild cat's eye bokeh, a form of mechanical vignetting illustrated by the CE sample, can be seen in the corners throughout the focal length range.

Sigma 70-200mm 1:2.8 EX DG OS HSM Review

There's a general downturn at 135mm. At f/2.8 we see 2,981 lines, which is a good result for a high-resolution sensor. Image quality holds steady right around 3,100 lines at f/4 through f/8, and peaks at f/11 (3,382 lines). There's a slight dip in clarity at f/16 (3,210 lines) and a more apparent one at f/22 (2,905 lines). Thus, all 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses I've used came with a tripod ring included, providing a balanced attachment point. The semi-rigid plastic Sigma LH914-01 Lens Hood is a moderately large, petal-shaped hood that provides significant protection to the front lens element from flare-inducing light, from impact, and from dust and moisture. We certainly don’t expect 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses to be modest in size nor weight, and the 70-200mm F2.8 DG OS HSM doesn't subvert expectations. In fact, its weight of 1,805g makes it around 265-325g heavier than its peers, while its 82mm filter thread and 94.2mm diameter are both relatively wide.

Interesting is how the different minimum focus distances relate to the different maximum magnifications in this list. The sharp image rate dropped slowly at longer exposures with the last sharp image captured at 1/8 second. those capturing portraits or photographing low light events, including sporting events, definitely will.

providing 1.4x and 2.0x magnifications of the original focal length while retaining the original minimum focus distance, translating to a 1.4x and 2x higher maximum magnification spec respectively. The first three examples are 100% crops while the second 200mm example and "CE" example are full images reduced in size. It's a modest enough effect that I wouldn't fret about it too much. If you do want to remove a vignette from your image entirely, the same Lightroom lens profile that compensates for distortion will also remove it.
