About this deal

Bauer Media Group consists of : Bauer Consumer Media Ltd, Company number 01176085; Bauer Radio Limited, Company number: 1394141; Like the Halfords pair, this comes in a foam insert for storing in a tool chest but, unlike them, there’s no additional plastic case. It’s a touch longer than the lookalikes and has easier-to-read metric and imperial scales although, as on others, the latter is in less-than-helpful fractions. Digital torque wrenches have a digital display that gives users an even more accurate reading. For most people, this is overkill. But if you have other hobbies that require the tools, you own a highly-tuned superbike, or you like precision – a digital torque wrench won’t break the bank. Incorrect force on your engine casings can result in an improper seal if too loose and damage the casings and gaskets if too tight. It has a fine, protected, 72-tooth ratchet, and metric and imperial scales. However, the former – and most common – is a nightmare to set, with graduations down to two decimal places.

Tip: Always reset your torque wrench to its lowest value after use. This helps it to stay correctly calibrated for longer Taiwanese-manufactured Draper tools are well-built and reliable for their price. This wrench is a ½ inch fixed square but can be fitted with various adapters (not included). Almost every nut and bolt on your motorcycle has a specific torque figure assigned to it. The only way to be sure you’re tightening these fixtures correctly is by using a torque wrench. It’s not the end of the world if you’re fiddling around with interior trim, but if you’re changing a wheel or working on your engine, it’s incredibly important to listen to a manufacturer’s instructions. This is the first of the tools that look like they’re all from the same factory, but it proved to be among the most accurate, only pipped by the Clarke. It was very accurate at the lowest level and only marginally outside the four per cent tolerance at the other two.Halfords is a multiple winner in this test, but the firm has taken a different route with its latest offering. It has rejected the common 40-200Nm or so range and gone for 60-300. It might miss some lower settings, but the extra length makes hitting the bigger numbers easier. The 30NM – 210Nm rating means this is unsuitable for the lightly clamped bolts and fixtures on a motorcycle. But at that low price, you can buy a second tool for those bits. Recommended.

It’s easy to think of torque wrenches as tools only for professionals, but even a simple job like changing a wheel is done better – and with less risk of failure or damage – if you use one. Things move slowly in the torque wrench world and, like the Draper, this is a returnee from our last test. Despite its age, it was the most accurate in the tests, easily inside the four per cent tolerance and just one per cent out at the 60 per cent measure.

Torque is a force applied at a radial distance and is a measure of how tightly you do up a bolt or fixing, and while screws may not need an accurate measure of torque application, most nuts and bolts do. The only way to make sure you have it correct is by using a torque wrench. The tool has a 24-tooth ratchet, but its biggest problem is having no imperial scale, ruling it out for owners of many British classic cars. It was always within tolerance, but it was not enough to overcome the price – around twice that of very similar tools.

A test debut for Northern Ireland-based Jefferson, which clearly sources its tools from the same place as others here. The calibration certificate is apparently filled out by the same tester as the Draper. This is not a cheap-and-cheerful tool. But it is the only wrench on our list capable of tightening bolts in both directions. The build quality is also top-notch. The micrometer-style adjustment knob is accurate and easy to use. Draper also issues a calibration certificate with each tool. Kept in its rugged storage case and set to its lowest value, this tool offers a lot of use before needing recalibration. Despite the name, this is only a little more than 27 inches long, but the extra length over most rivals is welcome for its 345Nm maximum. And it was most comfortable at its maximum, getting inside the tolerance. At the other two points, it was outside, struggling most at the lowest level.
