June 7, 2018 - A NY Times article on new research on Bee cognition - Do Bees Know Nothing? - by James Gorman Through imagining what it is like to be a bee, the novel ends up reflecting on what a marvel it is to simply be – cutting to the heart of existence as it pits the perils of extinction against the fierce instinct to survive. Subverted when a wasp enters the hive. It's faced by a horde of angry bees, but they don't use their stingers. Instead, they encase it and vibrate to raise its temperature and cause heat death.

Paull is also a playwright and there are moments of real dramatic tension, although the plot doesn’t always maintain a steady pace and at times breaks the bounds of believability. Nevertheless, the lyrical prose holds the attention, for this is a novel that delights in language, savouring words with the same relish with which Flora rolls honey on her tongue. The world-building is amazing - the psychology and structure of a bee society is already interesting and weird enough, but add a little bit of dystopia, interaction with other species and real-life ecological issues and I cannot complain. Undying Loyalty: All bees in the hive have eternal loyalty to their hive and the Queen, because if they don't they won't be around for much longer. It follows the story of Flora 717, a disposable sanitary worker, as she works in devoted service to the beloved Queen. However Flora 717 is an unusual adaptation from the rest of her kin - larger, more hardy. In previous years she would have been given The Kindness, but times are hard, and all must do their part to ensure the survival of the hive.It is a beautiful and cautionary tale about bees and how they are necessary to life on earth as we know it and how certain pesticides can be the enemy of the people and bees.

I love getting lost in a story and this author is a great storyteller. The characters in this novel are unique and brought together by unusual circumstances! I grew to love our three main characters and how they came together and drew strength from each other.Lavish and unique, The Bees is a study in world-building. Laline Paull has taken a dissertation’s worth of dry facts about apian culture and transformed them into a dripping, droning, vibrating multi-caste tale of a beehive. Dystopia meets the Discovery Channel in this audacious debut novel...while Flora 717 may not be the next Katniss Everdeen, she symbolizes the power that knowledge has to engender change, even in nature.

The story of what would happen to our ecosystem if one key species disappeared with tips on how children can protect our natural resources. First, a huge thank you to #GoodreadsGiveaway for this book. To say that I loved it doesn’t put my feelings into words! They have nothing in common, and yet bees (and Alice) bring them together. They become friends and give each other that human connection that all people need. They are further drawn together when a pesticide company moves to town and threatens the honeybee population. I wasn't sure I wanted to read this as I tend to shy away from anything written from the point-of-view of anything from the animal kingdom, but once I got into this I could not put it down. Flora is an amazingly well-created character and life in the hive is absolutely riveting, and I found myself caring about Flora and her kin more than I thought possible. I now want to watch the documentary "More Than Honey" to learn about these fascinating creatures. I will never look at honey in the same way. Even in the 21st Century, it's clear that while there are many countries enjoying freedom to express your opinion, still there are several ones where this is only a wild dream. That's why that stories like The Bees is still relevant and always is necessary to take on again the topic. Flora 717", the main character, a bee, due her birth cast, she is a member of the lowest cast in the entire hive, the Sanitation Bees, where even the skill of speak is negated by biology. However, nature finds the way to restore balance, to name a champion, and in this case, Flora 717 is a "deformity" to her cast, she can speak!, she can think! and most of all... she wants more! Nowadays those are odd questions since we are living in an era where you are not longer "classified" due your ethnics and even you can choose not believing the religion of your own family. An excellent book from the Collins New Naturalist Series, although not to be used as an identification guide.
