This service is available to you from about six weeks after the birth. By then, you will have had time to process what's happened. But don't worry if you don't feel ready to go over your birth experience for months, or even years. Choose the time that's right for you. This may be when you are thinking about having another baby. If you have tried all these options and are still not happy with the standard of care you had, you may wish to consult a solicitor. Though this will cost money and is usually a last resort. What will happen next time?If you are having another baby, make sure you get the care that you need.

Parents and carers have the right to be involved in planning and making decisions about their baby's health and care, and to be given information and support to enable them to do this, as set out in the NHS Constitution and summarised in NICE's information on making decisions about your care.Often women feel they shouldn’t talk about their positive birth stories, in case they make others feel bad about their own experiences. Most hospitals and trusts offer a birth debrief service either through PALS (patient advisory liaison services), an obstetrician or a midwife who has undergone specialist training to become a Professional Midwifery Advocate. For instance, there are reports of women not being aware that the after-birth service existed, not being able to access it when needed, women feeling blamed or judged, and the support not meeting their needs. A recent survey of after-birth provision in England found that most services were under-funded, not well promoted, there were variations in when and how often women could access them, and while just over half were provided by midwifery professionals who had received no specific training, amongst those who had received training, the level and content varied widely ( 11).carry out an assessment including the points in recommendations 1.2.1 to 1.2.5 and taking into account the time since the birth Some women find that they cannot do, say, or experience things that remind them of the birth trauma.
