The Light Between Us by Laura Lynne Jackson | Waterstones

Her second novel, The Light Between Us, was published in 2018. Katie is a writer from London who also works for a major film studio on a magical British film franchise. I had issues with the time travel aspect - I *know* that time travel is always problematic, and there is some discussion of this in the book, but what drove me absolutely crazy is that despite having lots of description & discussion of what the theory was with Thea's experiment, and things being explained in a way that made you feel like it might even make sense and be real, there are suddenly a whole ton of loose ends, and oddities, that just don't get resolved. I'm a bit one for resolution in stories, so these drove me pretty crazy! As alot of you know by now, I lost my father unexpectedly in April and have been having a really hard time dealing with it. But, as with her previous book, it was the ending that let the story down, and this time I've notched down to a 3 star rating rather than 4 as I just became very frustrated.

Strong female friendships made this story such a standout in modern literature. We have a group of women who are all well educated, supportive of one another and never undermine each other. Despite having vastly different personalities, they unite in support of one another and are always there at times of need. I also love how Laura has parts in this book that shows scientific tests and results to show that what she does is legit and that it is also very likely that all of us have this capability/switch in our brains to enter the altered state.

Aunque si me pareció algo repetitivo, y como muy enfocado en remarcar que ha sido objeto de muchas evaluaciones y que tiene sustento científico. I don't usually read historical fiction, but as soon as I saw the cover and read the description, I knew that I had to read this book. The internment of Japanese Americans in the United States of America during World War II was horrifying and unfair, but it (along with the Armenian Genocide and the Nanjing Massacre) is completely shadowed by the Nazi Holocaust. This may be an incorrect assumption, but most Americans may not even know of the Japanese Americans internment, Armenian Genocide, and the Nanjing Massacre until perhaps high school, but they have learned of the Holocaust in elementary or middle school. Yes, the Holocaust was still a terrible event that should have never happened, but I'm glad that author Andrew Fukuda also decided to inform readers of the mini-Holocaust that was happening in the United States, the alleged land of liberty and equality. I also really appreciate that the author's research on the events of the Japanese Americans internment (and also how Fukuda dated every chapter -- it makes the book so much more realistic!). If two books establish a pattern, then it's safe to say that Katie Khan's books are difficult to rate. There are parts that are absolutely astonishing in their awesomeness, researched to sound as realistic - or at least as possible - as possible. These are the parts you want to shout spoilers about and shove the book into everyone's hands. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese Americans were extremely discriminated against, which isn't talked a ton about in history. They were forced to move out of their homes onto a Japanese only island to hold "the criminals". Around the same time Hitler is taking over, the same general things happened to Charlie. They continue to write each other, being each other's happiness during difficult times.Elder, Vaughan (September 12, 2014). " 'Major' film coup for Otago". odt.co.nz . Retrieved September 16, 2014. Overall, great story and if you're already a die-hard fan of historical fiction, then definitely add this one to your list. Read this one if you don't know about Japanese internment camps or the 442nd as well. It's a part of American history that we don't discuss and honestly reflects the world that we live in today. We often hear of the horror of World War II, but not nearly enough--we so rarely shine that light against the most shadowy parts of history. Exploration of the internment camps, which served up sheer cruelty, is not something that is often spoken of. Many don't even know, fully, the extent of this fractured part of history--and that is completely devastating. This story, too, is devastating and stunning all at once--the way that Fukuda weaves these historical events together is as cold and smooth as you'd expect; poignant and thought-provoking.Sargent, Aryelle (November 14, 2014). Have you ever felt so determined to prove people wrong, you end up doing things out of character? Some might say that that is going overboard. Others might say that being passionate isn't a bad thing. But, if you end up being close to losing people you love because your mind is heading down one path, and one path only, sometimes the only question you need to ask yourself is, 'Is this all really worth it?'. A spiritual game-changer . . . For those suffering a terrible loss, you will find peace and comfort in her story. For those who question the afterlife, you will become a believer.” —Laura Schroff, co-author of An Invisible Thread Ryan Faughnder (August 30, 2016).
