About this deal

The Lost Whale has a strong environmental message and an atmosphere aided by the striking illustrations of Levi Pinfold, which help the story come to life, just as it did in the previous collaboration between author and illustrator in The Last Bear. With passionate and lyrical descriptions of the sea and whales, this novel takes us through Rio's emotional journey from a traumatised outsider to someone who knows his strengths and his place in the world. As he cares for Whitebeak, he comes to understand more about how he has cared for his mother in the past, what he can achieve and what he cannot.

This story follows Rio. After being sent to California from London after his mum has taken ill, Rio moves in with his Grandma. This starts out as a very strained relationship between the two. As the days go on Rio becomes less angry but no more engaging, until he meets Marine. She becomes the much needed friend who gives Rio a much need link to his mother.Rio has been sent to live with a grandmother he barely knows in California, while his mum is in hospital. All Rio wants is for Mum to get better so he can return home. But everything changes when he joins a whale-watching trip and meets White Beak, a gentle giant of the sea. Rio forms an instant bond with the whale, and for the first time in ages he feels a spark of hope. Then White Beak goes missing and Rio may be the only person who can help. A raíz de eso, la soledad y la conexión con otras personas (y seres) también son un tema prevalente en el libro. A spellbinding adventure full of illustrations by the wonderful Levi Pinfold - that will leave you in awe - Hannah Gold brings you close to the ocean, the wonderful animals that inhabit there and the wrongdoings humans have brought upon both. Kudos to the author, Hannah Gold for her successfully weaving a beautiful, inspiring and eye-opening story by blending extremely well two important issues, that are mental health illness and ocean conservations through this story. Before finding an agent and publisher, I did a variety of different things - from being a gym coach (albeit a not particularly fit one!), to working on a magazine, running online courses, being a copywriter and even a brief stint in film and television. All of this was great experience for me in terms of gaining confidence in myself as a person and my abilities. Confidence is not always an innate thing but is, I believe, something which can be learned.

Doing a bit of extra research about them (L-pod) spoiled the ending somewhat. I found Luna's name and saw that he died in 2006. I don't know why I was expecting a happy ending (or at least a happier one), but I was. The way Luna dies is really tragic and hard to come to terms with. I had to steel myself for reading the rest of the book.
