About this deal

The Book of Hours was an especially popular type of devotional text in the 14th and 15th centuries and was usually intended for the use of laypeople. It emerged from the tradition of the Psalter, which normally consisted of a book of Psalms plus other types of sacred material to aid the reader in prayer. Psalters and Books of Hours ranged from very modest examples to highly illustrated luxury objects. Of course, the latter are much more fun, and it is within these more expensively made tomes that we see some of the most memorable examples of marginalia. Some marginalia might have been tailored to the tastes of the patron, so it takes on this other level of meaning as well. Isobel Studley turns up in the records when she was committed to Clementhorpe in 1315, but it seems she did not behave herself there either, because in 1331 she was found guilty of “sins of the flesh, apostasy and other excesses” and was sent away to a priory at Yedingham.

A Canadian archaeological team in Sicily accidentally unleashes vengeful ghosts of five demonic nuns who were murdered 500 years earlier, and the ghosts now set out to kill the group and townspeople alike. In the early 90s, Manchester’s cultural revolution was in full swing. “Everything was thriving,” remembers actor, writer and comedian John Thomson who grew up in Preston before studying drama at Manchester Polytechnic. Beyond the Haçienda, a comedy scene was growing in the city’s pub rooms where Thomson made friends with Wythenshawe local Caroline Aherne. “In Manchester at that time, there were a lot of funny people,” Thomson says. “Caroline was naturally funny.”

Mexico produced the wonderfully titled Satanico Pandemonium which would later lend its name to Salma Hayek’s snake fondling stripper in Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez’ ‘From Dusk Til Dawn’. Matt- It’s highly unlikely that Marginalia would be idle doodling. The materials used to create these manuscripts were extraordinarily expensive, and the process was extremely time consuming.

Sadly, for the romantics among us Mrs Goodrich debunks the lot. The famed “secret passage” leading from the old nunnery buildings in the direction of Worcester Cathedral is, she says, nothing more than a rather large drain. Taunted by visions of Mary Magdalene, who reveals the confessions of the younger nuns at the convent, the Mother Superior's mind is filled with the violent, sexual acts of her fellow sisters. A succession of bishops failed to keep a lid on Wroxall Priory and Bishop Bransford wrote of “recalcitrant nuns needing ecclesiastical censure”. During the 1570s, in the convent of Sant'Arcangelo di Baiano, after the death of the mother superior, a power struggle rages on, as one nun, who comes from a powerful family, is willing to do anything to become the new abbess. A nude bishop chastises a pooping cleric in the Gorleston Psalter, c. 1310-1324. (British Library Royal MS 49622, f. 82r.) Collectors Weekly: Why did marginalia eventually disappear?A young woman forced into nun-hood by her corrupt father teams up with an army of Muslims to destroy the convent and kill those who wronged her. Manning: Yes, particularly in the 12th century and earlier. The content became more varied as literacy grew more prevalent among various classes and as society became a bit more secularized. Chivalric romances were very popular, as were epic poems and tales of travel (like The Canterbury Tales, for example). Traditionally speaking, however, reading and writing was a concern of the church. Monks and nuns, particularly, needed to be able to read sacred texts, and because their duties included copying them, they needed to write. But in the later Middle Ages, literacy among the secular elite became more common. These sisters may be doing it to themselves (often in titillating, erotic soft-focus) but, as brides of Christ, their bodies should belong only to God.

Nothing to do with hospital wards, rather the goings-on in, of all places, a nunnery in the Worcester Diocese in the Middle Ages. An old-line Mother Superior is challenged by a modern young nun when they take the girls of St. Francis Academy on a bus trip across the United States. Singapore's top policewoman, Miss Cleopatra Wong, who heads the Seasian Interpol Criminal Investigation Department (C.I.D.), teams up with her Filipino counterpart to bust a counterfeit ... See full summary» One of the reasons Agnes had come to grief,” explained Mrs Goodrich, “was her infatuation with a priest, John de Warton, on whom she showered ill-afforded victuals and gifts and worse, was her partner in immoral relations.” For his sins, the priest was banned from the convent by Bishop Cobham.Convent antics don’t come wilder than in Pedro Almodóvar’s dark Spanish comedy, where nuns indulge in LSD trips and lesbianism, and take coke with prostitutes. A former Miss Great Britain stars in an otherwise typical Italian nunsploitation involving hot nuns plus massively overhyped amounts of actual nudity, lesbianism and torture. A group of pilgrims in the Vatican is trapped in an enclosed elevator. Then chaos erupts, and repressed urges come to the surface. Gripped by sexual desire, nuns pleasure themselves and each other in fear of the Mother Superior. One night, a wounded man is found on the grounds, and becomes connected to a mysterious pagan statue on the premises. This movie, while marketed under the relatively innocuous English title "Loves of the Nympho", may be the most insane of the many insane offerings of Italian director Sergio Bergonzelli, who was already making the kind irredeemable sleaze in the early 70's that his fellow countrymen like Joe D'Amato, Andreas Bianchi, and Bruno Mattei would be churning out by the end of the decade. This seems to be a kind of sequel to Bergonzelli's earlier "Cristiana, Student of Scandal" (at least, if the title character hadn't died at the end of that)with Toti Achilli taking over the role Malissa Longo originally played as a college-age, ridiculously promiscuous, micro mini-skirted minx.
