About this deal

Clear away slimy rotting foliage but leave other stems standing to provide winter interest and somewhere for overwintering insects. Most commercially sold citrus plants are grafted to ensure they fruit at an early age. Ungrafted plants may take up to ten years to fruit, so make sure the plant you’re buying is mature enough to crop. The easiest way to be certain is to buy a plant that is actually in flower and/or fruiting. Citrus plants are usually slow growing and when started from seed may take seven to ten years to begin fruiting. So commercially, citrus trees are propagated by budding or grafting, as the resulting plants will start fruiting much earlier, in as little as two or three years. Both are quite skilled techniques, but well worth a try. If the leaves on your lime tree start to curl and turn yellow, this can be an indication of root rot and that the compost is too wet. Trees and plants experiencing root rot need to be repotted urgently into dryer, well draining soil. Next, look out for branches that are either growing downwards, inward towards the trunk or any that are crossing each other. The aim here is to encourage your tree to grow outwards and upwards to create a nice bushy shape with an open centre.

Rake up leaves and tidy edges before winter. You can also use a rake to scarify the grass to remove as much thatch and moss as possible. This will help with drainage as well as improve the grass by bringing light and air to the roots. Come spring your lawn will thank you. Citrus trees need balanced nourishment in summer and winter so top up soil with the nutrients of our winter citrus feed every few waterings for an extra boost. It will help aid your tree in growing a strong crop of fruits and protects the foliage during colder months. Pests: The most likely pests are woolly aphis and red spider mite. These can be easily controlled with an appropriate off-the-shelf spray. Occasionally scale insect may settle on citrus, and can, again, be easily killed with an appropriate insecticide spray, or by dabbing with methylated spirit. In general, you should be doing your citrus fertilizing about once every one to two months during active growth (spring and summer) and once every two to three months during the tree’s dormant periods (fall and winter). As the tree gets older, you can skip dormant season fertilizing and increase the amount of time between active growth fertilizing to once every two to three months. In winter, when plants are indoors, allow the surface of the compost to partially dry out before watering, then water thoroughly with tepid rainwater, allowing the excess to drain away. Overwatering in winter is one of the commonest problems, so err on the dry side. And never leave pots standing in water, as this can cause the roots to rot. Yellowing of the leaves or shedding leaves can be signs of overwatering. Your lime tree will be happiest kept in a location of the home away from any radiators, underfloor heating or cold drafts. Fluctuations in temperature and humidity are the main 2 culprits for wreaking havoc and causing stress to citrus trees. Taking great care of your lemon trees will ensure copious rewards. The fragrant flowers can bloom throughout the year and the fruits can ripen in any season. Plants can be placed outdoors in summer, from mid-June to late September, if sheltered from cold winds. At other times, keep them in a cool greenhouse or conservatory. Citrus are not ideal houseplants, as the heat and dry atmosphere can cause scorch. Vitax Winter Citrus Feed is a carefully balanced winter feed for all citrus plants. Citrus plants flower year-round, so ensuring you're feeding the right nutrients during the colder months will help fruiting in the summer.

In winter, allow the surface to partially dry out before watering, then water thoroughly with rainwater, allowing excess moisture to drain away. Overwatering in winter is one of the commonest causes of stress in citrus, so keep them on the dry side. Feeding Citrus trees are hungry plants, so feed regularly during the growing season. From mid-spring to mid-autumn, tomato feed or liquid seaweed solution is ideal. In winter, use a winter citrus feed once a month. Like other plants, citrus trees have different levels of hardiness and can tolerate different temperatures. Although some are more hardy than others, still make sure to bring them indoors over winter in an unheated conservatory or hallway. Don’t overwater your citrus tree. In summer, wait until the potting compost is partly dried out, then water thoroughly and allow all the water to drain through – don’t leave the plant with its roots sitting in water. In winter, allow the compost to almost thoroughly dry out between waterings. Hand mist trees in winter to increase humidity.Branches that grow inwards or cross each other can cause overcrowding on the inner part of the plant. This restricts light and airflow from reaching the inner canopy and can leave your tree more susceptible to infections and pests. In the UK, pruning can be conducted at any point throughout the year but is best done just before your tree is about the blossom.
