About this deal

There was a book talk with the author and Scholastic with Lucy Powrie at the weekend. It was great to be able to 'attend', and hear little things about it which were happily put into context as I read. Also there is a conversation between Lou and Freya that I may have teared up at because it slightly hit close to home with figuring out some things about my own future- but in a good way. Literary pursuits weren’t always easy in a busy, noisy household, but Loufound sanctuary in the house and grounds of the Cardew family. They seemed to have abandoned their Cornish home, and so she told herself she was doing no real harm by eating their apples that fell from their trees, reading books from their library, and even lighting a small fire to warm her on cold days.

It's also more of a spin-off than a sequel, so dont worry about not having read A Sky Painted Gold first! Luchia Houghton: For those who haven’t yet read A Sky Painted Gold, first of all how would you explain it in your own words? It’s early evening and it’s starting to get dark now. The lights strung above us in a looping zigzag shine white against a royal blue sky. We’re walking further into a residential bit of the city, and the windows in the tall houses glow, warm and welcoming. Some contain glimpses of decorated trees, of brightly coloured paper chains, and jewel-like glass ornaments. [...] I love the way Laura Wood writes - it's so clear and smooth and there's some great dialogue and humor as well.

Laura Wood always creates such picturesque scenes in her books and she definitely didn’t disappoint with this one. From the twinkling bright lights of the theatre, to the loud bustling parties at pubs and quiet reflective whispered moments between two characters. They are all just so beautifully written. My main complaint about A Sky Painted Gold, is that I felt like nothing really happened until the last three chapters. Yes, the party scenes where fabulous and I do enjoy a good slow burn romance, but I feel like there was no real plot here. I do think Louise was a bit annoying and naïve, but we must remember she is only seventeen and this is her first time getting to see what life is really like outside of her village. Some things about the main character were a bit repetitive, such as Lou constantly worrying about never finding love or comparing herself to Alice. Two plot points I found rather predictable, but they were still entertaining! i won’t lie..much to my surprise, this book didn’t carry the same magic as laura wood’s other books that i have read :( i have literally been counting down the days until this book was to come out and I’m a little disappointed!LW: I like all sorts of things, I like it when there’s like a really sparky relationship like I really like it when it’s like enemies to friends to lovers, that’s one of my favourite things I would say. I like lots of different ways I really love Georgette Heyer romance novels like I’ve loved them for a long time and they’re my ultimate comfort read and I’d read hundreds of them and read them over and over again. And what I really like about those is those tropes but all the different romantic tropes are in her books and they’re familiar and they’re comforting but its also what you do within that that makes them interesting. Thank you so much to Laura for answering my questions and to Kimi for the chance to ask them! It was such a great day in general and I’m praying for that masquerade party! Laura Wood's A Sky Painted Gold was one of my favourite books of 2018, and I've been looking forward to the sequel. A Sky Painted Gold followed sixteen-year-old Lou as she made friends with the wealthy Londoners who spent the summer of 1929 in her small Cornish village. The book dealt with the culture clash between the Great-Gatsby-inspired parties and decadence of the visitors, the sleepy village, and Lou's large and eccentric family. Lou's experiences give her the opportunity to move to London and pursue her dream of becoming a writer, leaving her family behind. 'A Snowfall Of Silver' follows Lou's younger sister Freya as, inspired by Lou, she makes her own journey to London to follow her dream of becoming an actress.

The Cardew siblings, Robert and Caitlin, are often talked about in the London press, and plastered in the magazines. The magazines, that Lou and her sister, Alice, enjoy reading. The Cardews want to get out of the limelight and the stressful city life for the summer. This takes the two siblings and their whole array of friends to the old Cardew estate in Cornwall. Lou comes across one of their parties one night when she is sneaking around the house. She becomes swept away in all the glitz and glam of their party lifestyle in the roaring summer of 1929. LW: I don’t think it was really like a huge decision it just felt like always something that I had been interested in doing like writing both, it just happened that I wrote the middle grade first. So I think I wanted to write YA because I read YA a lot and I really love it I think it’s a really exciting place to be to be working in like the community is so amazing but also it feels to me like its a place where people are doing really good work like really cutting edge stuff and really pushing lots of different boundaries. And it feels really new and vibrant and so I definitely was always really excited about getting into it and its only like really exceeding all my expectations of what it would be like it’s brilliant.

Success!

A Sky Painted Gold was a joy from start to finish and exactly what I needed after seven agonising weeks in the worst reading slump I’ve ever been in.

I do have two little things that bugged me: the vague references to Iris' tough life/persona seemed a little out of place (the moment where she reveals the knife?! and that she's apparently trained with it?! very impressive, but a little out of nowhere). I'm thankful we didn't have a mean-streets-of-London montage or something, but I think we could see Iris' toughness without throwing in those details: they were pretty jarring.

I really liked the theme following the artists in and out of Bea's Uncle's house. It added another layer to the story and also helped to contribute to Bea's passions being truly unearthed. This book is very much about finding yourself, having a fleeting adventure and learning a new approach to life. Finally, our favorite side characters, which didn’t feel like side characters at all, might I add, Klaus, Ursula and Filomena. These three were somewhat exactly what you need in these coming of age stories : strong people with strong convictions and a “let loose” kind of attitude. Filomena was the mother that Bea never had, nurturing and kind, which is sad in a way, because Bea’s mom is far from dead. LH: The parties were one of the most amazing parts of it, especially the last one which was my absolute favourite.
