And it's about Dylan's 1964 visit to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, not drugs. As for what this song is about, I feel that it is about being "open to experience" and the "call to adventure." It could also be about artistic inspiration, but people who are artistic are usually already "open." Sometimes people try drugs because they are "open" as well, but if drugs are referred to in the song, I don't feel they are as important in the song as being "open" in the first place. I think the point of the song is the desire to experience something. Maybe that's different for everyone. Seven months earlier on May 9th it entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; and on June 20th peaked at #1 (for 1 week) and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100... If I had to choose a favorite song, it would be Dylan's "Tambourine Man."
