A ‘soft corn’ (heloma molle) is a corn where the surface skin is damp and peeling, for example between toes that are squashed together. Make sure the corn is fully submerged for about 10 minutes or until the skin softens. 2. File the corn with a pumice stone

Completely dry your corn. This is an essential step to avoid trapping moisture under the corn cap. Step 4 Corn cap

Heart, Blood & Circulation

I just wanted to let you know that with the help of your Carnation Corn caps, I have recently been able to remove a very hard, deep-rooted and painful corn from my left little toe which had been making my life pretty miserable for some time. I have now been going around singing (to the tune of Born Free) “Corn free, with Carnation corn caps”. A study in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research compared salicylic acid treatment with simply scraping the corn away in a doctor’s office. Scraping the corn in a doctor’s office is a procedure that people call debridement. Unfortunately, the salicylic acid in Corn plasters cannot distinguish between healthy skin and corn and, as a such, can burn the skin quite severely spreading to surrounding healthy skin. The paste in corn plasters spreads to surrounding tissue blistering and burning the skin. The corn and the surrounding skin become white and soggy and more often than not the centre where the corn was remains with the skin beneath becoming fragile and breaking down under the weight of the corn. This leads to wounds, ulcers and infection. This is particularly important to avoid for people with diabetes and circulatory conditions as well as those who are immunocompromised but they can more often than not affect healthy young people too! Examples The modern medical word for a corn is Greek heloma (plural helomas or helomata); Latin " clavus" is somewhat dated. Another term is tyloma 'callus' (plural tylomas or tylomata), which tends to be more common in the United States. A hard corn is called a heloma durum or clavus durus, while a soft corn is called a heloma molle or clavus mollis. [1] There are also direct treatment options, including corn pads containing salicylic acid. People can apply these directly to the corn.

At least once a week in clinical practice, I will have someone come to me for a painful corn, they have usually tried every treatment available over the counter either to no avail and have further problems made worse by these corn plasters. When I debride the hard skin, I will find the skin has ulcerated beneath and this requires debridement and a regular dressing plan to get the skin stable again. For those who aren’t squeamish there is a great video which shows just how the acid affects the skin and how a podiatrist will debride it. So, I suggest it is best to avoid using corn plasters all Clean the feet: Regularly cleaning and scrubbing the feet may help reduce dead skin cells in the area that build up to form corns. Use a moisturizing lotion or cream with salicylic acid. Salicylic acid dissolves the keratin protein that makes up the corn and the surrounding dead skin. However, salicylic acid is generally not recommended for people with diabetes, poor circulation, or frail skin. 4. Use corn pads Results of a Corn Plaster Evaluation (CoPE) Trial on ‘The long-term effectiveness of 40% salicylic acid plasters on corns’, comparing the application of Carnation Corn Caps and scalpel treatment on 202 patients, carried out between 01.04.2009 – 31.03.2012 by Podiatrists of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Find the research here. Using padding such as bandages or corn pads to protect the sensitive area may also help reduce symptoms. Some people use bandages on pressure spots to protect their feet when they have to wear particularly uncomfortable shoes. Other tips Maximum Comfort: Apollo Pharmacy Corn Caps provide extra care and maximum comfort while removing corn from your feet. You'll feel confident and comfortable wearing these corn caps all day long. The results of the largest ever clinical trial* comparison versus scalpel treatment shows that Carnation Corn Caps: A soft corn tends to develop in between the fourth and fifth toes and has a comparatively thinner texture. They cause many problems I see in clinic and I don’t think ANY person regardless of age, medical conditions should use them What are Corn plasters?
