Carbide Rotary Burrs, often referred to as rotary files or die grinder bits are used for cutting, shaping, and grinding, and for the removal of sharp edges, burrs and excess material (deburring). Different uses mean the bits come with either a single or double-cutting profile. Single-cut burrs have a single cutting profile or ‘flute’ that runs from the top to the end in a spiral. 3. The Various Shapes of Carbide Burrs and How To Use Them

These aren’t the ordinary bits that you’d use in drills and impact drivers. They’re made of tungsten carbide, an alloy of tungsten and carbon and exhibit exceptional properties. The alloy is up to three times as hard as steel and has the highest compressive strength of any known metal. In such situations, a right angle die grinder is very handy. 4. What Speed or RPM should you use your Carbide Burrs?

Weld Spots: If you do metalworking, then you know how annoying welds can be. A die grinder can easily remove the excess welds for smoother, cleaner looking metalwork. This is definitely a must-have tool if you do a lot of welding or metalwork of any kind. Here is an example to illustrate. In figure.1, you can see that it is impossible to grind the hole with a straight grinder. Helpful note: If the burs are chipping easily this could be due to the speed being too slow. Generally, a metal burr is manufactured from either high strength steel (HSS) or Tungsten Carbide. When working with metals only, tungsten carbide burrs are mostly preferable. This is due to their durability in handling several demanding jobs without wear or tear. The HSS burrs, on the other hand, have a reduced tolerance for heat. As a result, high temperature and pressure tend to soften the HSS tool. Compared to HSS, tungsten carbide burrs can last longer. Besides the differences in use and the materials, they work best in single and double-cut options and also are distinguished by how they operate. The first produces larger chips, so getting the finish you want may take longer. Additionally, double-cut types are easier to control with the finer cutting profiles and are the ideal type for beginners.
