About this deal

While we can’t confirm this currently, we’ve been told that the blade guard and main frame of the drone will be purchasable as replacements from DJI, allowing owners to replace them if they have an unfortunate accident.

Where the DJI FPV sensor had only 12MP resolution, the new sensor has 48MP. However, we suspect it has a similar number multiplied by the clever use of oversampling filters rather than having 48MP sensor elements. This enhancement makes for crisper video and much cleaner still images. DJI includes frames to hold prescription eyepieces, though, so if you're an FPV pilot with bad eyesight, you have some recourse. Just how you can get the lenses is a question that DJI wasn't able to answer, though. A representative suggested that interested customers could consult with their eye doctor to have custom lenses made for the frames. I didn't have the time to investigate further or visit the optometrist during my review period, however. Lastly, the Avata has a reasonable amount of internal storage, about 20GB, which is enough to hold around 20 minutes of 4K60FPS footage. The quadcopter supports a MicroSD slot, but finally, DJI made a drone with more internal storage than just 8GB. Design and Controller As humans don’t come with consistently-specced eyes, the Goggles 2 allows for both a degree of optical adjustment along with Interpupillary Distance changes. The experience of flying your drone first-person is mind-blowing. You actually feel like an eagle, and the learning curve is non-existent, taking no more than a few minutes to get used to the controls before I was whizzing through the air. Thanks to the Motion Controller we mentioned earlier, it’s also effortless to manoeuvre.Compatible with DJI FPV Remote Controller 2, which is sold separately, and the DJI Motion Controller. DJI RC Motion 2 currently does not support the DJI Virtual Flight app.

Critically, the transmission bandwidth is still up to 50Mbps, so it’s a balance between resolution and framerate, with the new Goggles 2 going for resolution over frames-per-second. The Avata has a nose-mounted camera for both FPV viewing and video capture. The lens has a wide view of 12mm in full-frame terms, and it’s a Type 1/1.7-inch with an F2.8 lens and boasts 64% more surface area to capture light than the ½.3-inch sensor of its predecessor. A bigger sensor means better low-light condition photos, but it also provides an improved dynamic range if you choose to shoot in D-Cinelike. These commercial flying machines were initially born as a tool for travellers and photographers to take better footage of their trips, but people soon understood how useful these machines could be in almost any aspect of our lives. Drone applications are endless for businesses, and we’re not far from the point when we’re going to wonder how we ever lived without drones in our daily lives. The max flight speed is subject to dynamic local restrictions. Please abide by local laws and regulations when flying. The main difference between these Goggles and the ones you might use with a standard FPV are that DJI's ones have a cut-down version of the DJI Fly app, which means you can fly the drone without a mobile phone or tablet attached. Tested with a production model DJI Avata in a controlled environment. Actual experience may vary depending on the environment, usage, and firmware version. To fly safely in this manner, you really need a space that's free and clear of other humans. If you fly the Avata into a tree, the worst you have to deal with is a broken drone. In its zippy 31mph Sports flight mode, the drone could do some real damage if you hit a person, however. I also expect shattered glass or a broken windshield if you run into a building or car. Needless to say, you shouldn't bring this drone to a public park. The Avata‘s design is a Cinewhoop style where prop guards are built into the airframe to protect the propellers and provide a degree of resilience in case of crashes. This drone doesn’t fold up, and the camera, electronics, and battery sit above the prop guards and propellers. The star of the show here is the video quality, but pictures are also staggering, as the Avata Pro can capture JPEGs with its 48MP CMOS sensor. You can take manual control of exposure or shoot in auto, but pictures often have a wonky horizon, so it’s not ideal to use the camera for still images.

You can also use the Goggle to change settings and access menus. A touch-sensitive panel, located just ahead of your right temple, supports swipe and tap gestures for navigation. In the menus, you can adjust video settings, set a custom geofence, and access the useful post-crash Turle Mode option, which flips the drone right side up after a crash landing. One slightly surprising feature if the DJI Avata is that it's substantially slower than its DJI FPV predecessor. However, the most exciting addition to the FPV drone is the DJI Goggles, and we’ll go over them in the next dedicated section. DJI Goggles 2 You can attach a phone using USB-C and use it to update firmware and manage the recordings that the Avata makes, but this isn’t necessary to fly or record video. This tiny branch hopped onboard the Avata for a ride—the drone kept going, even with the leaves caught up in its propellers (Credit: Jim Fisher)One issue that the DJI FPV suffered from was that, in certain maneuvers, it was possible to see the blade tips in your videos. On the Avata, this is still an issue, but only when the wide-angle modes are being used and the camera is pointing downwards. DJI claims in outdoor environments, clear of interference, the Avata will go up to 10km (6.2miles.) And while this may be true if you live in the middle of nowhere, in normal circumstances where you have power lines, buildings, and other obstacles, you will have significantly less range to fly. DJI Goggles Integra feature an integrated battery headband, making it convenient to wear and removing cables. The connection between the drone and the Goggles 2 is Ocusync O3+, the latest version of DJI’s transmission technology. Depending on what region you are flying, O3+ can provide a video and control link at up to 10km, or only 2km if you are based in Europe.

Shift in white balance can also be problematic. If you leave the camera set to automatic mode, it’s a little slow to react to changes in colour temperature, something you’ll likely have an issue with when you fly from an area with bright sunlight into the shade. For better results, in this case, we recommend the manual mode. Videos The through-the-camera view shows a sharp, smooth perspective, with low enough lag to make high-speed flight possible. DJI doesn't specify a latency in milliseconds, but the 1080p/100fps feed feels real-time to me. For the most part, the video feed is clear and sharp, but I did note some garbling and resolution loss when the transmission signal weakened. If you opt for the kit with the older FPV Goggles V2, you're limited to 810p resolution. FCC: United States, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Chile, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and other regions. This is one of the few downgrades of the Avata. The newest FPV from form DJI has a top speed limited to 97kph (60mph), which is much slower than its predecessor. Battery Life Along with being lighter, the Avata is also much smaller at just 18cm square and 8cm high, enabling it to get through much narrower gaps. The front of the frame also has an angled section, which should deflect the drone down if you flip the underside of a window or other horizontal structure.Real-time screen correction is unavailable during recording, but can be applied to the footage recorded on the drone.
