About this deal

Great care must be taken when selecting a farrier, so ask your vet for recommendations. Correct trimming and shoeing is vital to the horse’s welfare, and any mistakes can lead to serious, lasting damage. If shod, the shoe should fit the foot with no gaps between the shoe and the foot. The clenches should be about one third of the way up the hoof wall from the floor. They should be in a straight line and be flush with the hoof. The toe clips should also be flush with the hoof wall. Meant to be a treatment for nappy rash, this versatile product can be smeared onto hoof horn with no ill effects and is very effective at killing bacteria and fungi This newly trimmed section of hoof gives you a good idea of what the different structures of the hoof wall and sole look like. On a white foot, the differences are much less easy to spot.

This hoof supplement contains the optimum levels of biotin alongside a range of other vitamins, minerals and nutrients. The pedal bone is arched in shape which gives this relatively small bone the strength to bear the weight of the horse. It spreads the pressure created by distributing weight through the entire bone to reduce tension. This vitamin- and mineral-rich supplement is made of a blend of seaweed, rosehip and pure biotin, providing the vital nutrients to support healthy hoof growth and coat condition. When viewed from the lower surface, the hoof wall's free margin encircles most of the hoof. The triangular frog occupies the center area. Lateral to the frog are two grooves, deeper in their posterior portion, named 'collateral grooves'. At the heels, the palmar/plantar portions of the walls bend inward sharply, following the external surface of the collateral grooves to form the bars. The lower surface of the hoof, from the outer walls and the inner frog and bars, is covered by an exfoliating keratinised material, called the 'sole'. Bars are the inward folds of the wall, originating from the heels at an abrupt angle. The strong structure built up by the extremities of the heel and of the bar is called the 'heel buttress'. The sole between the heel walls and the bars is named the 'seat of corn', and it is a very important landmark used by natural hoof trimmers to evaluate the correct heel height. The bars have a three-layer structure just like the walls (see above). When overgrown, they bend outwards and cover the lower surface of the sole.At 15mg/500kg per day, TopSpec Healthy Hoof contains the clinically proven levels of Biotin that improve hoof quality, boosted with Zinc, Copper, Iodine, Vitamin A and Methionine, all shown to increase the effectiveness of Biotin. There are two and a bit bones inside the hoof. The Pedal bone, the Navicular bone and the bottom part of the Short Pastern bone. If your horse lives in, or likes to stand in his own pooh, this could be enough to cause White Line Disease. A horse’s dung is full of the bacteria, fungi and protozoa from the hind gut that were used to digest the horse’s food. Once excreted they stay alive in the horse pooh for a while, and continue to feed on whatever food sources are in its environment. Hoof horn is very tasty to these bugs – in fact studies carried out by Sue Kempson 16 found equine faeces were very efficient at breaking down hoof horn – far more efficient than stale urine which is commonly thought to “soften” feet (it doesn’t). Many people apply neat Hyrogen Peroxide at 35% concentration. If you want to stop it from dissolving away healthy hoof horn the concentration needs to be no more than 1.5% (3% diluted 50:50 with water) The picture on the left shows a laminitic hoof that has suffeed from pedal bone rotation. You can see that the area of freshly rasped wall at the bottom is exposing damaged hoof horn filled with blood products that provides an ideal environment for infection to take hold.

Thankfully, there are many products available that are very effective in treating hoof horn, and thankfully, most of them are easy and cheap to obtain. Initially you should disinfect using a hoof soak which will penetrate deep into the hoof and kill off the hoof horn. Use either of these: These are attached to the pedal bone and serve to protect the coffin joint. They also help absorb concussion. Once optimum hoof quality is achieved through TopSpec Healthy Hoof, it is recommended that the dosage be continued indefinitely, as without continued supplementation, deterioration is a real threat.

How to choose a hoof supplement

In the UK the coronet band is thought to be so called because coronet means “crown”. In other parts of the world the phrase “Coronary band” is often used – coronary meaning “pertaining to the heart”. This is a very tough, vascular structure which sits at the top of the hoof wall. It has two very important functions. Firstly it produces the tubules of the outer hoof wall. Secondly, it is incredibly strong and acts as a band of support to add strength to the internal structures as the hoof distorts during the stride. These are caused by an injury to the sole of the foot, usually by standing on a hard object or concussion from hard ground. They can also be due to poor trimming or shoeing. When a foot is out of balance, or a biomechanical issue in the horse’s body is causing it to twist a foot or significantly weight one side of the foot over another, this can cause sufficient mechanical stress to apply a shearing force to the layers of hoof wall. This creates small defects at the ground bearing surface of the wall which can begin to harbour infection. Obviously imbalances can be corrected with careful trimming, but biomechanical imbalances may need to be corrected by a good equine bodyworker to reduce or eliminate the shearing action and allow the infection to grow out. Sometimes the stresses placed on the wall are from poor conformation or joint problems such as arthritis, in which case the condition will just have to be managed with a combination of careful trimming and good hoof hygiene. Mechanical stress can also include holes made by nails in shod horses. These not only harbour bacteria, but because the hoof wall flexes around the nail, this creates additional damage which allows bugs to enter the hoof wall. Self-adapting capabilities of the hooves show their maximal effectiveness in wild equids (but domesticated horses show this too, to a lesser extent), as shown by the perfect soundness of feral horses, such as Mustangs, in a wide variety of environments. Most of the bugs that cause White Line Disease are fairly innocuous and very easy to eliminate. However, problems occur when people use substances that are too caustic and drying, causing the healthy hoof horn around the area being treated to begin to dry out and become food for the bugs, making the problem worse. Common hoof dressings that often exacerbate White Line Disease are: The front and hind hooves are identical in the foal but differ visibly in the adult horse. This is good evidence of the medium-term plasticity of the whole hoof shape, as a result of variation in its use. Slow changes in hoof shape occur under any consistent change in the horse's movement pattern and under a wide variety of pathological conditions. They can be seen now as a clear example of a complex adaptive system, a frequent feature of living beings and structures.

PROFEET Liquid

Also known as the Middle Phalanx, the short pastern bone sits on top of the articulating joint of the pedal bone and underneath the long pastern bone. Only the bottom portion of this bone extends as far as the hoof capsule. Symptoms are acute lameness that gets progressively worse, red or bruised areas seen on the sole, and reaction to pressure on the sole due to pain.

It normally occurs when the toes are allowed to become too long, but it can be a result of laminitis or of concussion on hard ground. As most hoof care products come in a liquid or semi liquid form, it is important that the design and quality of the container prevents from leakage and is easy to be cleaned. It is important because most hoof feet products are oil based and potential spill or leakage would be difficult if not impossible to clean. Presence of a brush One area where I believe this treatment truly shines is in aftercare for damaged nails, particularly after removing acrylics. The smooth balm texture provides a nurturing layer that helps to restore and protect nails that have undergone stress or damage. In this regard, it seems to excel and could be an essential addition to anyone's post-acrylic nail care routine. A corium is a vascular structure which manufactures hoof horn. For instance, the solar corium will produce the sole and the frog corium produces the frog. The coronet band contains a corium which produces the tubules and intertubular horn of the hoof wall, whereas more intertubular horn is manufactured in the corium surrounding the pedal bone (also known as the dermal layer or laminae). The perioplic corium sits under the coronet band and produces the periople. It is undoubtedly long and challenging process to become a qualified farrier and one thing is clear, good nutrition will underpin good farriery and provide a horse with a hoof they can work with.
