I loved the investigators. Susan's a divorced homicide investigator, trying to raise twins and hell all at the same. Tommy is the newbie, just happy to be on this case. They work together well, and I love when Susan tells her new partner that it isn't like the movies. I couldn't wait for them to unravel the mystery together. My favorite part about this book was that it was a perfect blend of thriller and procedural. Procedurals can sometimes feel drawn out, but this one had elements of both procedural and thriller so it was extremely fast-paced. I was seriously hooked right from the beginning and it never once lost my attention. I found this book to be so intriguing because it constantly kept me guessing and there was never an obvious idea of where the story was going to go. ⁣For now we see in a mirror, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know fully even as also I was fully known. Thanks for the excellent essay, Paul. I’ve made a few comments below that I nearly decided to delete, because some of them are broad and a bit undisciplined. But I’ve decided to include them since I think a couple of the talking points are still worthwhile in this type of forum. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, even as I was also fully known.

Fundamentally, my problem with this book is that it was not at all—and I'm about to use a Cursed word here— relatable to me. My adolescence could not have been more different from Alderton's. Obviously I don't need an author to have had the same experiences as me to enjoy a book, but I feel like with this book especially you need to have some personal connection with the content for it to resonate with you—I didn't. And so what I thought was going to be an emotionally impactful read in theory ended up being a forgettable, meh book in actuality. The main character Randall was likable and you could really feel that his life was being turned upside down. I also liked the state police officer, Susan, and how the author contrasted scenes of her personal life at home with her job hunting down killers. There wasn’t a dull moment in this book and truly nothing in this book is what you think. The perfect apple (in terms of weight, crunchiness, taste, color, texture, smell etc.) only exists in the realm of forms, and every apple you’ve seen in real life is just a shadow, an imitation of the perfect one. That said, their instrumentalist epistemology, according to which our everyday understandings are not indicative of ultimate truths, has a currency today. For now [in this time of imperfection] we see in a mirror dimly [a blurred reflection, a riddle, an enigma], but then [when the time of perfection comes we will see reality] face to face. Now I know in part [just in fragments], but then I will know fully, just as I have been fully known [by God].

I’ve never read a book like this, in actuality, the title being about “love” tends to be a big red flag for me to avoid it. BUT several of my friends have read this and really enjoyed it, so I thought I’d give it a go. And I’m glad I did! This book made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me be contemplative and think about my own life/existential crisis of being almost 27 with zero direction in life and the constant comparing and contrasting to others. For presently we see through a glass in obscurity; but then, face to face. Presently, I know in part; but then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. Ya know that Matthew Farrell doesn't believe in carousel rides. I Know Everything will be heavy on the psychosis sauce. But who exactly is serving it up and who exactly is partaking with spoon at the ready? In other words - this is genuinely one of the most lovely and funny and heartwarming memoirs I've read in my rather short life so far. I LOVE it more than I could possibly say. I laughed out loud (even on the tube which I find daunting) and cried on and off throughout as so many of Dolly's words rang true to me.
