About this deal

They have four pots of two similar types, so definitely can produce different marques, but I strongly suspect the Barbados culture works against them for that – Barbados likes low ABV blended rum and traditional production has accommodated that. At Mt Gay they focus on consistency for export, and they also significantly reduce prior to ageing which will limit their ability to make higher ABV releases for a long time, though they do age the pot and column marques separately so can do pure still releases as the origin series showed. Notes: Named after the year the distillery was founded (1703). This is Mount Gays premium rum. A blend of minimum 10 year old to 30 year old rums blended to show off their best product. Fermented in oak vats (many distilleries now use stainless steel) using using water filtered through the islands coral geology (limestone aquifer) from of an almost 250 ft deep well.

Drinks: Please don’t . Best enjoyed on it’s own. A drier alternative to many other anejo rums out there (particularly the Venezuelan or Guatemalan). Barbados is one of the most densely populated island nations in the world. Hundreds of years ago, Mount Gay could rely on the molasses from local sugar cane for all of its needs, but that’s no longer the case as there simply isn’t enough available land anymore. In addition, while there used to be nearly 40 sugarcane refineries on the island, only one remains active today. So, although the distillery relies on sugarcane sourced from around the Caribbean, it only imports varieties that are native to Barbados.

One such variety in use is BT7782, which translates to bred in Barbados, selected for growth in Trinidad in 1977, and assigned the number 82 during research. The spirits world loves its superlatives, and Mount Gay can claim one of the most coveted. With a deed of sale for the original plantation dated Feb. 20, 1703, Mount Gay is the oldest continuously operating commercial rum producer in the world. The team at Mount Gay strongly suspects production was going on even earlier, and has recently uncovered a deed from 1654 that might seal the case. Today, Mount Gay produces the majority of Barbadian rum that is exported globally. Old Brigand is another locally popular brand, but it’s not nearly as exported. It was a Sober family affair for centuries. Her natural curiosity and great professionalism guarantee a prosperous future for Mount Gay. Trudiann possesses the desire to create, explore new ideas and establish a productive dialogue that is in line with Mount Gay’s ambition. For the oldest continuously running rum distillery in the world, it is a great pride to see her, the first female Master Blender, in this prestigious role. The ageing process is particularly unpredictable in the tropical Caribbean climate, and at Mount Gay, we prefer to talk about maturing. In two or three years, our rums can reach the same level of maturity as an eau-de-vie aged for two or three times as long in a temperate climate.

Review: Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum and XO Rum (2020) Review: Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum and XO Rum (2020)

Mount Gay’s current master distiller, Trudiann Branker, is the first woman to run things in the distillery’s history. A native Bajan, she studied Chemistry at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and also has an MBA. Following a five-year apprenticeship under Mount Gay’s previous master distiller, she took on her current role. The first special expression she’s been working on will debut in fall 2019. There are four main expressions.Taste: Spicy, paradoxically sweetish and drying entry, some citrus, dried fruits and flower notes, persimmons, cinnamon, sandalwood notes, medium-to-heavy bodied. Lovely oak pepper and vanilla notes intermixed ginger, leather and tobacco. Nice drying finish to it. Finish is long with a spicy dry tingling to the lips. Since this is a brand that gets more distribution, I hope Malt readers looking for Malternatives will try some of these. Sounds good, but how do the new bottlings fare? Let’s taste (including a comparison against a 2008 vintage bottle of Mount Gay Extra Old). I am aware of the fact that for many people the blending of pot and column rum and the resulting balance is what defines Bajan rum. I do not agree. Sure, it has developed that way over time, but the original style was born in pot stills

On the nose: Light fruity and floral scents that make me think of peaches, coconuts, golden kiwi and apples. Midway through, the ethanol becomes more pronounced and contends with the other scents. On the nose: Immediately very pleasant scents of coconuts, apricots, marzipan and banana syrup emerge. The banana syrup and marzipan are the most pronounced, yet they’re gentle scents. Behind those two are undertones of vanilla, cinnamon, honey, pineapple syrup, oolong tea and canned peaches.ABV rum from Barbados. This is the top rum from one of the oldest distilleries in the world, Mount Gay (outside of their specials). A blend of rums aged 10-30 years in American oak barrels. It is said that 55 different casks were used for the blend. My version is from 2018. Mount Gay XO has been “enriched with a broader palette of rums selected, individually aged in three different casks – American Whiskey, Bourbon and Cognac – for five to 17 years, rather than the previous eight to 15 years. The adjustments to the blend aim to enhance the liquid’s ultimate complexity.”
