About this deal

The sole in the Metcon 6 seems to have found the perfect balance between running and lifting job descriptions. Nike Metcon 6 for HIGH INTENSITY TRAINING (Burpees, Box Jumps, Kettlebells, Lunges) To draw a comparison I just prefer the feel on the foot from the higher heel cup and tongue of the Nano X, and prefer Reebok’s classic design and more subtle sole rope wrap. The only reason it didn’t get a full 10/10 was its performance during a run, even a short one, as part of a workout or warm-up. The Metcon 5 felt heavy and stiff when it came to moving through the running gait. The launch colorway of leopard print (women’s sizes), camo print (men’s sizes) and a dark Mat Fraser special edition was not to my taste at all. The forefoot of the midsole is a much more cushioned foam – and that’s great for sprints, jump rope, box jumps, and more.

As such they are tiny bit long, but I’d rather have shoes that are slightly too long than slightly too narrow. But to be honest, Nike put so many great performance features into the Nike Metcon 5 I’m glad they didn’t mess with success. If you’re currently using the Metcon 5 as a training shoe and wore one on each foot, I’d challenge you to be able to find many differences in the sole feel. I’m basing that on the fact that most of the shoe seems to be unchanged from last year’s Nike Metcon 5. The Inov-8 BARE-XF 210 V3 does everything you would expect from a minimalist cross-training shoe: it's flexible, comfortable and provides excellent grip during workouts. Perfect for lifting sessions, although it might need some getting used to if you never tried barefoot shoes before. As we’ll discuss shortly, they are basically the same. Nike Metcon 6 X aka What the Metcon aka Metcon Knows

You can run in these, but remember that the heel (which is firm, stable) doesn’t have much cushion. So far we have found the most popular training shoes to be superbly fit for purpose across almost all areas, bar their weight, their wide, clumpy feel on the feet and breathability. One more shot of the width difference – because that’s a big deal – if you need it. The Reebok is a Men’s Size 11, the Nike is an 11.5 THe NIke Metcon 6 looks good and carries forward all my favorite parts of the Nike Metcon 5. The breathable upper is a nice change too – I workout in Florida – in a garage with no A/C. From the side you can see the rope wrap. This is where the tough rubber sole wraps up around the shoe. Great for grip on rope climbs, and it’s super tough too. This ensures the friction from the rope doesn’t destroy the upper.I wasn’t expecting to enjoy running in the Metcon 6… but I actually didn’t mind it. For short bursts (less than 5 minutes or so at a time, the Metcon 6 is more than fit for purpose.

If you’re a harsh heel striker, the firm heel is far from ideal, but the sole does offer some cushioning, the shoe stays put on the foot, and I managed to get in some speedy sprints in them, both on a treadmill and outdoors. The hyperlift goes under the midsole – and when it’s in place it gives you more heel raise. Great for squats, thrusters, and pistols. Beyond the upper, everything else is carried over unchanged from the Metcon 5. The all-rubber, flat, super grippy outsole is still there. Same shape, same diamond wide heel, flex grooves, etc. For the first time ever, Nike brings FlyEase tech to the Metcon line. These have laces, but you really only have to tie them once.

Nike Metcon 6 Conclusion

The feel of the upper is rigid and structured to give support, much more so than a running shoe, which may take some getting used to. I wear an 11 in just about every other Nike shoe – and shoes from other brands like Reebok, UA, etc.) Let’s face the facts: the Nike Metcon 6 is a light update over the Metcon 5, at best. It is more breathable and has an updated topcoat that is supposed to be even more resilient than the one found in the Metcon 5. In my humble opinion, the Nike Metcon 6 should be called ‘Metcon 5 Mat Frazer Edition’, as this update is more to do with Nike collaborating with the ‘fittest man on earth’ as opposed to updating the product itself. Sizing advice is the same for both shoes. Because of the cramped toe box, I go 1/2 size up to get adequate width in the toe area. This was my same sizing for the Metcon 5.

The biggest change has come in the form of a much superior and breathable upper, made with large ventilation holes to increase airflow and also give a much lighter feel on the foot. I wear a Men’s Size 11 (US) in all my Nike running shoes, and in most shoes from Reebok, UA, Adidas, etc. In fact, the heel is so firm and dense, these shoes make a “clip-clop” sound when you walk – Just like Oly lifters! (But not nearly as loud). Why? Because just like it’s predecessor (the Nike Metcon 5) it’s a bit tight and cramped up in the toe area. Stand out is the extended sole wrap, seam overlays in contrasting colors which divide the shoe into two very separate parts, and large zig-zag lace overlaysIt also doesn’t have a firm heel cup like in the regular edition shoe. How could it? You wouldn’t be able to collapse the heel to slide your foot in. These types of accessory exercises are super important for runners looking to improve their speeds or prevent injuries (which is everyone right?!) and the typical running shoe just doesn’t cut it. That said these shoes don’t really have any heel raise (4mm) until you put in those hyperlifts – and then they’ve got 12mm of heel raise!.This is great for minimizing ankle flexion in the pistol squats, thrusters, and really anything that requires squatting. When we reviewed the Metcon 5 we loved the stability underfoot (especially when lifting weights) comfortable, wide fit, durability and general aesthetics of the shoe.
