On both counts I was disappointed. No explanation is offered, and all that is just used as setup for that tired old Humans are the Real Monsters tripe that's been done to death by this point.

I suffer from bouts of insomnia myself and so this premise is especially terrifying and interesting, in equal measure. The second half of this novel seemed to switch in direction and take the reader on a more abstract and fantastical journey. I continued to appreciate the gorgeously lyrical writing style, as well as the overall ingenuity, but I longed for a return to the somewhat simpler initial stages of the novel. The story ends without providing full closure and there are a couple of plot holes that aren't filled. I didn't find these complains overbearing and still enjoyed the book for the most part.

The first section of the book talks about the history of the fabled Book of Nod and has most of the commentary from the “author”. This book has been pieced together by their travels and research and collected into one place to have a close translation of all core text that belongs in the Book of Nod. Our narrator is Paul, an etymologist working on a book about words that have been lost. He lives in a small Vancouver apartment with his girlfriend Tanya, a successful PR who is as outgoing as Paul is reclusive. Paul’s life seems cosy, if a little controlled, when the world-changing event takes place.
