If you are using more than one type of eye drop you should administer them at least five minutes apart, to prevent the second drop washing away the first. Use eye gels or ointments last. Patients who suffer from severe dry eyes tend to use artificial tears often throughout the day. This leads to the eye being exposed to high levels of preservative, causing toxicity in around 9% of patients. Patients using artificial tears >4-6 times per day should use apreservative-free preparation. Patients may find some of the delivery systems quite difficult to use so selection may depend upon the dispenser type as much as the lubricant it contains.
